Wasn't Magikarp one of the most common Pokemon in Hoenn? Sure, shinies are rare, but I'd expect that to be one of the more common shinies.

The red Gyarados is probably the first shiny Pokemon the majority of us ever saw (excluding the anime). At the time, it was pretty valuable.
The movie was basically about the human reaction to a virus that starts rapidly spreading around the world by contact. I won't say any more in case you ever decide to watch it, but all in all it was a good movie. ^^
