You replied to yourself. To reply to a VM, either click on the "View Conversation" button on the bottom right of a message, or just go to that person's profile and post there. I did the same thing quite a few times before I figured it out. xD

Oh, one last thing about clans. Most, if not all the clans, have chats. Some links can be found on a clan thread's OP, some can be found in someone's sig (like mine), and some are only given out to memebers. Meeting the members in chats are also a great way to get to know other members of a clan.
