You can not only see it how obsessed he is with battling, but also how he approaches strategy when he really really wants to win. In the gym battle with Korrina, Ash starts out with the rhythm technique, not realizing that doesn't work for him. He eventually comes to know that his own unique rhythm is how you win, but not without hardships in the battle

Not only that, but that aspect of Ash's character highlighted once. But Ramos literally comments on it his gym battle with Ash! Literally word for word, Ash is once again overly obsessed about the gym battle and is on the brink before realizing his one-track mind was negatively impacting him
