I think it's likely to be a japanese company's character just because the only western company's characters have been Banjo (who Nintendo used to own) and Steve, both from the same company.

Ubisoft, Bethesda and a small handful of indies (one of which is ALSO owned by Microsoft, for that matter) are the only other notables and by "notable" I really just mean "they got trophies/spirits/mii costumes"

Which is all to say I really feel like Nintendo doesn't have a lot of interest in western characters.

I would also argue that Banjo and Steve had something going for them. You mention Banjo's, but Minecraft was hugely popular in Japan.

It would seem weird though if they did have a Western character, but decided to feature Kazuya at the Western game show.
