I think you mean it has base 43 speed. As not only is it's defence base 97, but also defence is not affected by trick room.

That maybe so. But it makes little sense as to why it would be dark, as the thing that gyarados was originally based off of was the chinsese legend where a karp becomes a dragon. Also add that they didnt give it a better option than bite, and it makes me wonder what they where thinking.
