It's already October! Let's discuss the next iteration of the annual SPPF Fanfiction Awards - where you can nominate and vote for your favorite stories of 2019.

The current standing rules from last year, with dates adjusted, are as follows. Share any suggestions for additions or adjustments here!

Nominations

- The nomination phase of the awards lasts from January 1st, 2020, 00:00 UTC to February 13th, 2020, 23:59 UTC. If necessary due to low nomination totals, an extension to February 26th, 2020, 23:59 UTC will be given.

- Any member of the Serebii.net forums may nominate for the Fanfiction Awards. Nominations should be submitted through the special 2019 Fanfiction Awards website, located here; to nominate, go here. You will have to verify that you control a Serebii.net forums account in order to nominate or vote, either through an automated process involving editing your user profile or by PMing Dragonfree here on the forums. Further instructions can be found on the site.

- Broadly, anything posted in the Fan Fiction, Completed Fics or Non-Pokémon Fics forums in 2019, defined as the period from January 1st, 2019, 00:00 UTC to December 31st, 2019, 23:59 UTC according to the forum's post timestamps, is eligible for nomination. Specifically, for the "Fic Moments" awards, the nominated moment should be from an installment posted in 2019; for more general story awards, at least one installment of it must have been posted in 2019; and for author/reviewer awards, the member in question must have posted at least one fic/review in 2019. The site will automatically enforce this as far as possible.

- When nominating, you may place up to two nominations in each category. You must nominate at least four different authors or their works in all. You may not nominate the same story more than five times total, or the same author more than six times total. Additionally, you may not nominate yourself or your own works in any category. The awards site enforces these limits automatically.

- Asking other people to nominate your work is not allowed. It is up to your readers to decide whether they want to nominate you. The same goes for applying implicit pressure to nominate you (e.g. messaging your friends about how the awards are going on and linking to your fics, without saying in so many words that you want them to nominate you). You may call attention to the awards and encourage people to nominate their favorite fics in general, to boost participation, but attaching advertisements for your particular work to any such post is not appropriate. Failure to conform to these guidelines may result in disqualification from this year's awards.

Voting

- The voting phase of the awards lasts from February 14th, 2020, 00:00 UTC to April 14th, 2020, 23:59 UTC. If necessary, an extension may be given.

- Any member of the Serebii.net forums may vote in the Fanfiction Awards, regardless of whether they submitted nominations. Like nominations, votes are submitted on the 2019 Fanfiction Awards website; the voting form is located here. You will have to verify that you control a Serebii.net forums account in order to vote, either through an automated process involving editing your user profile or by PMing Dragonfree here on the forums. Further instructions can be found on the site.

- In each category, you can vote for one of the submitted nominations, or you can pick 'No Vote'. However, you must place an actual vote in at least half of the categories in order for your ballot to be valid. Additionally, you may not vote for yourself or your own work in any category. The awards site enforces these limits automatically.

- Like in the nomination phase, asking people to vote for you is not allowed. The same goes for applying implicit pressure to vote for you. You may call attention to the awards in general to encourage participation, but any effort to encourage votes for you in particular is inappropriate. Failure to conform to these guidelines may result in disqualification from this year's awards.

Awards System

The 2019 Fanfiction Awards website is run by Dragonfree and open-sourced on GitHub here. Feel free to make feature requests in this thread or, if you program, contribute by forking your own copy and making a pull request (don't just make some significant change without discussing it with anyone first and expect it to be accepted, though!).

None of the currently open issues are easy pickings for new contributors, or very high-priority, but if you have any feature requests, by all means make them.

I seem to recall that there was a proposed category last year for Best Epic in order to give some more space for shorter stories to stand out in the awards. Was there any interest in doing something along those lines this year? I don't know what the considered criteria last year were, but I'd think that being a single narrative along the lines of at least 200k words in length and 40 chapters would do a reasonable job at being a dividing line.

Hush, keep it down
I'm up for giving it a test run, although we'll need to have more discussion once the awards end about it.
