Although the name "Godzilla" may ring a bell in people's ears, entertainment from the East is still considered a niche market. Though Japanese animation has been gaining momentum in the States these past couple of years since the days of Dragon Ball Z hit Cartoon Network, New York-based marketing company 4Kids Entertainment claims it's gotten hold of a hotter property.
One Piece is a work by Eiichiro Oda, a man who ironically was inspired by Dragon Ball Z creator Akira Toriyama. Because of this association and One Piece's success in Japan with troves of merchandising opened the eyes of 4Kids Entertainment President Alfred Kahn.
"It really is a golden opportunity." claims Kahn, "I mean Pokemon was big but the marketing potential in One Piece is HUGE! However, the series isn't perfect unless we make it appropriate for the American audiences. Granted, we do make changes from its original manga but kids don't read manga, so it's okay that we make our edits."
Rupert Murdoch and Al Kahn had a meeting to discuss film adaption plans. Talking over creative liberties to take from the original script. Casting options are well underway
"We're thinking of casting Frankie Muniz and Lindsay Lohan as the characters Luffy and Nami." an unnamed Fox Executive stated, "Maybe we'll add Snoop Dogg to play as Gold Roger's wandering ghost who adds comic relief, kinda like the Flying Dutchman from Spongebob... only with funky Hip-Hop style to appeal to the urban youths."
Some of the roles already cast were Elijah Wood as Captain Kuro and Christopher Walken as Don Krieg. Haley Joel Osment is currently negotiating his role as Sanji.
When asked about how the film will be received throughout the world, Norman Grossfield was enthusiatic, "We hope that by the time One Piece hits theatres in 2008 that even the hardcore naysayer anime fans will agree we're doing the right thing. Our movie will blow Matrix and Star Wars out of the water."
The film is expected sometime in 2008
