8th Gen Regional Variants

Oshakpop

Eeveelution Master
I would LOVE these to return, as in the mechanic - but like many have said, GameFreak have a tendency to drop things as fast as they became popular. Despite that, I'd love the following:

First off concept wise - I get what people mean regarding Alola = Kanto so Galar = Johto, so I'll start there, in terms of speculation. There was 10 lines with variants, so if that was the case, taking into consideration the UK inspiration in terms of climate etc. i'll go for a similar number. Taking the full dex, I'm removing the starters, legendaries, and any lines that have any evolutions afterwards from them for obvious reasons.

Girafarig - Dark/Psychic - It's "tail" is it's dominant half due to being seen as prey within Galar's region.

Hoothoot/Noctowl - Ice/Dark - Snowy owl found in the snowy mountain area of Galar. Hoothoot adapted to the colder climate by becoming bulkier.

Corsola - Grass/Rock - Due to the overwhelming majority of land in Galar and cold sea, Corsola adapted to the enviroment by becoming land bound, becoming part Grass-type.

Snubbull/Granbull - Dark/Fairy - Galar's not been kind to the Snubbull species and so its adapted by becoming part Dark-type alongside its Fairy typing.

Then the others I think but don't have thought out reasons:

Marill line, Sunkern line (Grass/Fire), Skamory, Houndour line, Heracross, Phanpy line.

I'd like an Ice regional variant of Rockruff/Lycanroc based on Arctic wolves

If they want to do gen 1 pandering always (and they do), I'd like an alternate form for Butterfree. They didn't do anything with the cute original butterfly for ages while they gave Beedrill that insanely cool mega evolution.

Hylden General.
If Galarian forms are introduced, I think it should change the Pokémon from the more Tropical regions like Hoenn or Alola.. Not the likes of Noctowl, Donphan.
Like a Ice type Seedot or something. Since Galar seems a bit colder that those. But even that is a stretch to me.

Any thoughts to making the Vivillon line a regional variant. They could add the line to each regions pokedex and assign each region its own pattern. This way players can acquire the different patterns without having to track someone down in a different region or do a Vivillon GTS trade and hope you get the pattern you want.

New regional idea I love.

G.Dwebble, G.Crustle

Bug/Ice

The Dwebble of the Galar region found many water ways frozen over, as their body temperature dropped and their skin turned blue they found frozen snowballs to build homes out of. They will make snowballs to throw at foes, and if need be use their shell as a weapon if all else fails. But will quickly make a new home afterwards.

Crustle in the Galar region carry around homes made from multiple layers of snow and ice. It's said that they didn't always have a snowman atop the highest layer, but upon adding them no Crustle will be without one. They often leave their icey home to make sure that their snowman looks exspecially nice during the coldest parts of the year.

No other region besides Kanto is listed, because so far no other region got regional variants, and that will likely continue to be the trend, again, assuming this is a thing. If not, then this list is meaningless.

While I like the idea of Game Freak making older Pokemon more relevant by giving them upgrades, I'd much rather see that handled as Mega Evolution rather than regional variants. It's mostly just my pet peeve, but I found the designs of a lot of the Alolan variants lazy, so my main concern about there possibly being regional variants in Gen VIII stems from my fear that we'll get more lazy designs this time around.

Your list makes a lot of sense. I now expect regional variants for wigglytuff and zubat and if they don't happen I will be explicitly disappointed!

It's mostly just my pet peeve, but I found the designs of a lot of the Alolan variants lazy, so my main concern about there possibly being regional variants in Gen VIII stems from my fear that we'll get more lazy designs this time around.

To be fair, there are a good number of mega evolution designs that are the same level of "lazy" as certain regional varients. Personally i prefer regional variants (the ones with the bigger changes, such as ninetales, sandslash, raichu etc) over mega evoltions because they feel more natural. They also give the pokemon a permanent new playstyle, new typing and forme instead of a temporary thing that needs a specific carried item .

Bolt the Cat

Bringing the Thunder
There's definitely room for this feature to return, Dynamax covers a lot of what Mega Evolution and Z-Moves did, but Dynamax Pokemon aren't really a new form in the sense that it allows for changes in typing, stats, abilities, etc. I could see them having Galar forms alongside Dynamax. I hope this time they give them to more than Kanto Pokemon though, there's a lot more potential in some of the later Pokemon too.

Butterfree really should have variations, or regional form, or mega evolution. It was skipped over yet it’s so well known in Pokémon

It's not a game Kate.
I'm glad regional forms were not a one and done thing.

Okay, these new regional variants just instilled more hope for SwSh. I had my doubts since Dynamax is pretty DOA, but nothing, NOTHING can stop me from getting a top hat Weezing with a green ‘stache. And it’s even black!!
