A Breeding Question

Ok, here's the deal: I've been playing Pokemon for years and years ever since Red & Blue, but only recently (in trying to conquer Battle Tower) have I started to take notice of the things you can do with breeding. I've been reading more about it, but frankly I just don't understand it. I have a Ruby/Sapphire guide that lists the moves pokemon can be bred into. Now, it doesn't say that Spheal can be bred with Sleep Talk, but when I look at the Egg groups, I don't see why not. Follow my logic here...

Slakoth can be bred with Sleep Talk
Slakoth is in egg group "Ground Group"
Walrein is in egg group "Ground Group"
Walrein is in egg group "Water Group 1" also
Spheal is in egg group "Water Group 1"
Spheal can be bred with Sleep Talk

So what's the deal? Can someone please help me understand this a little better?

Just because a pokemon can breed with another, it doesn't mean you can give it any egg move. Egg moves are certain moves that if the father knows the move, the baby will have it as a move. These moves are limited so we don't have pokemon with insane movesets. By that logic, Smeargle can be bred moves (whereas it can only ever naturally learn sketch, it must use sketch to get anything else) and inversely any pokemon could use smeargle as a way to get odd movesets. There is a limitation on some of those moves.

The egg move system works by connecting a pokemon that learns a certain move with a pokemon that can learn it by egg move only. sorta like a game of connect the dots.

Yeah, I read the sticky and more, I still don't get why my theoretical breeding chain for Sleep Talk doesn't work. Did Game Freak simply choose a few moves that could be bred and not include the others or what? I don't see the logical pattern here.

Yes... That is correct. Gamefreak chose the moves that can be bred onto a pokemon. Just like they chose which moves it learns by level up or moves by tutor.

If a male has the move Confuse Ray and the females first evolution can learn confuse ray as an egg move, it will learn it.

Yes, unfortunately each Pokemon has a SET list of Egg Moves it can learn, you can't pass down any move you want. In your example, Spheal doesn't have the move Sleep Talk as one of its Egg Moves, so it couldn't learn it through breeding.

If you still have any questions about Breeding please post them in the Breeding sticky:

The sticky also has a list of Egg Moves for each Pokemon and how to breed it on.
