Well um, first of all this is my first pokemon fic (first if you don’t count ones I wrote in grade school and long since forgotten). And second, I am not familiar with the pokemon anime at all, because I haven’t seen any of the anime since years ago, so excuse me if the names I use are already belonging to someone else in the anime.
This fic is probably what I would have liked for my own pokemon journey, rest assured that it is not a Mary-Sue, I have read and wrote enough fanfics to realise what they are. Basically, she owns no legendaries, nor powerful fully evolved pokes, nor is she a perfect happy-doo-dah type girl. Maybe a legendary *might* show up later, but then again, they always do.
Also, I must say I love Gardevoir, their beauty, their elegance, ever since when I played Pokemon Sapphire, and on the road to the Hoenn league, Wally ran up to me and challenged me, the psychic pokemon he used has won my love. I understand many of you love Gardy too, and although this is a fic with Gardy as one of the main characters, I am NOT copying anyone’s idea.
I have a soft spot for romantic names, a trait I will pass to my main character XD
Oh and one more thing, I write in English English, not American English, so don’t go nitpicking at “colour” or “recognise”, thanks.
Rating:13+…for now? Rating may go up.
Pokemon violence, implied violence, no “real” violence though.
Itsy bit of romance
Genre: Action/Adventure/Humour first half, maybe Drama/Romance second half.
And with that, I humbly present: A Different Kind Of Journey
~Prologue~
The only sounds that filled his mind were leaves crunching beneath his exhausted feet, his own rasp breath, and the sound of his amplified heartbeat. His lungs burned, and his throat gurgled painfully, his mind longed to stop the agonising movement, but his instincts told him, no.
There was no sun, only gloom. No one can help him now. He had long since withdrawn his only pokemon, on the verge of dying from the wounds contracted from the claws owned by dark pokemon. She is fragile, he told himself, he cannot let any more harm get to her.
She is both his lovely assistant and loyal companion, who could memorise up to tomes of information at a time; she helped him a great deal in his work and research. She was invaluable to him.
Then one day, she saw something she should not have, the company ordered her destroyed, but he would not have that, so he took her and ran for both their lives. They ran and hid for days, no food, no water, no shelter. The candle of his strength was burning low to a stub. He felt that he could function no longer. But somehow…somehow, he must protect her, he will not let them get her…
Suddenly, he slowed down and halted, and picked up a soft babbling sound, a river is nearby. The man had an idea, he changed course, and ran towards the sound. It may be the only way to save her, for in water, the dogs cannot pick up a scent. In his thoughts, his feet missed a step, the man gasped a surprise and he slid down a slope to the water’s edge. The sharp rocks cut his clothes and the skin underneath open. In his tumbling, he thought he heard his left foot crack.
Wasting no time, the man ripped off a sleeve, took out a pokeball and wrapped the sleeve around it, doing up a tight knot after binding 2 layers to the ball. When he was sure it would not shatter, with the last of his strength, he tossed the bundle into the gushing water. It bobbled for a bit on the surface, then, carried by the tumbling currents, the package disappeared from his sight.
“…find someone who would cherish you as much as I did. For we might never meet again, my dear Eriya…”
The thundering of paws and feet on ground grew louder as he laid his head to the earth, and closed his eyes.

~Chapter 1~
“Guuu~”
A girl’s stomach rumbled most ungracefully. Nadia clutched her middle and sighed.
It was not a completely brilliant day for her, even though the sun was bright but not hot, and the road was not dusty, and not many people sniggered at her cheap clothes, and the grass were green and pokemon who played in the bushes were really cute…oooh, she tended to dwell on details too much.
When she was nervous she picked at her mouse-grey hair. She was not a beauty, with a roundish face, skinny body, and bold green eyes that she was rather proud of; another thing she liked was her name. Nadia had an insatiable love for beautiful and romantic names and her own made her feel quite the princess, instead of some scallywag who had no money and no badges. Nadia was poor, perhaps – very convinced by herself – the poorest trainer of her age aiming for the Hoenn League. When she was ten, her family didn’t have enough money to buy her the beginner trainer package, which included a beginner pokemon, Trainer ID, PokeNav and a bunch of other things she couldn’t remember. Now she was thirteen, and finally was able to go on her own pokemon journey.
It was not only because she wanted to, but she had to. She had to win at the league, because the prize money would be what she would use repay her family, if she stayed a champion, then…whoopee. This was what Nadia thought before she left behind her mother and little sister to travel over the continent of Hoenn. But the journey was tougher than she had thought; she had scarcely won any trainer battles, and caught no new pokemon. Now on top of all that, she was hungry too.
“Sometimes I wish I wasn’t so poor, Juan.” Nadia took out a pokeball and talked to it.
Juan was her beginner pokemon, a mudkip. It was a playful little thing, and it ate more food than she did. This fact constantly plagued her.
“If I don’t start collecting badges and winning more battles, we’d both starve, more you than me though.” She said jokingly to the mudkip in the ball. Knowing he wouldn’t understand anyways. At that, she smiled to herself a little sadly, she had no friends to talk to either, who’d want to befriend a cheap poor girl like her?
The sun is dipping slightly to the west, and the sky tinged orange and pink in the late afternoon sun. There goes another day without much to eat. Nadia sometimes felt sorry for Juan, who had to be her pokemon and suffer the lack of luxuries along with her.
Feeling weary, she began to look for a place to lodge, looks like she isn’t too far from the nearest town by now, so says the PokeNav.
Suddenly, she spotted lights on the horizon, sparkling lights that could only indicate bodies of water. Nadia became excited, it was long since she took a bath and let Juan out to play. And it’s completely free, too. There was still time to spare before it becomes dark, and she hurried towards the shining lake.
***
Nadia changed into her swimming suit behind a bush, and released Juan out of his pokeball. The mudkip yapped his joy as he dashed towards the clear water, immediately beginning to dive and dig into the smooth sand and mud. Nadia followed Juan, shaking her head at the small pokemon’s actions. She slipped into the water, letting the cool and refreshing sensation lap onto her body, she laid on the soft sand, the feeling was so heavenly, she could fall asleep…any…minute…
Nadia awoke to splashing on her face. Juan was nudging her gently; the sky above was of pure orange colour.
“Agh! Sorry Juan! I must have overslept, look at the time, oh shoot…” Nadia apologized as she stood up, quickly rinsed her body of sand, but the mudkip was butting her leg, trying to get her attention.
“Yes I know, I’ll go soon, and find a campsite or something… what’s that?”
It was only then did she notice a dark, wet, ball-shaped mass behind the mudkip. Juan was happy that his trainer finally noticed the treasure he found, and jumped up and down. Nadia went closer to the mass; she poked it gingerly with a finger, and sniffed. No bad smells or some disgusting feeling, she reached out and took the bundle. She was surprised it was made of cloth, and there seemed to be a tight knot. She could feel something hard inside. Nadia picked the knot with her fingernails and managed to loosen it.
To her and Juan’s surprise, it was a pokeball, just a normal, uninteresting pokeball.
“Wow that was rewarding,” said Nadia, disappointed, she half-wished it was filled with expensive jewellery or something. She studied the ball, it was clean and smooth, almost like it was new from the store. The red reflected her curious face.
“I wonder what’s in this ball…” She mused aloud, Juan the mudkip followed suit with a small “Muu?”
She pressed the button, and a stream of white light exploded from the ball, assembling itself into a solid, shining figure.
“Oh, my…” Nadia held her hands to her mouth, at a loss for words.
