A Discussion on the Usability of Nasty Plot on Deoxys

Well, there's a new Deoxys distribution on the horizon. This Deoxys, is different from its predecessors: it gets Nasty Plot, one of the best boosting moves in the game.

Some people would claim that this is an Arceus-send for Deoxys, as it enables the mutated virus to sweep the entire game unhindered if given the opportunity to set up. Others wave it off as useless, declaring that Deoxys will always be either too frail or too easily Taunted to be able to set up and sweep successfully.

My question to you, the readers, is this: what do you think of Deoxys' new gift of Nasty Plot? How usable do you think it is? How well do you think Deoxys can use it? Do you think that Deoxys' new gift is capable of furthering its already near-unlimited potential, or do you think that giving Nasty Plot to the forme-swapping space virus will be about as useless as giving your spouse a whoopee cushion on your wedding anniversary?

This set is designed to be able to tank hits and Recover while setting up and dishing out massive damage. Nasty Plot is our handy-dandy set-up move. Deoxys is able to tank a hit or two with its titanic defenses, then it can use Recover to regenerate its HP. There's a choice to be made between Psychic and Ice Beam for your attacking move: the former for a handy STAB boost, the latter for some great coverage and no immunities to block you. Magic Coat is there to reflect Toxic, Taunt, Thunder Wave, and the rare-yet-not-so-rare Dark Void back at opponents who wish to shut Deoxys-D down.

Team support would be greatly appreciated for this set. There are some Pokemon that are capable of OHKOing Deoxys-D such as Reshiram in the sun and Kyogre in the rain. A Choice Scarf-wielding Zekrom can take them both out easily with the appropriate STAB move. The twin pink blobs are capable of walling Deoxys, but they can't hit it with Toxic for fear of Magic Coat deflecting it back at them.

I think that on Deoxys-A, nasty plot would not be very useful, as it's offenses are already amazing and due to its low defenses, setting up would be extremely difficult. While Deoxys-S has decent defenses, it the land of powerful Uber pokemon, setting up would again be hard. Deoxys-D could make use of Nasty Plot, especially with Magic Coat to get around status, be could be easily worn down by choice specs/band pokemon, and by super-effective moves like Genesect's U-turn, Ttar's Crunch, and Darkrai's Dark Pulse.

Nasty Plot Deoxys is bad.

A and N forms are so goddamn frail they will never have a safe moment to set up. Not that they even need setup to utterly trash anything that they can hit super-effective.

Deoxys D doesn't hit nearly hard enough. The defensive set in the OP is bad and only hits 352 Special Attack after a Nasty Plot, weaker than +0 Timid Latios. It takes three Nasty Plots for that Deoxys to reach ALMOST the same level of killing power that Darkrai does after one Nasty Plot. Defensive Deoxys also has **** coverage and is slow.

Deoxys S could almost find use for it, at least it would if its movepool wasn't stretched as it is. What will you run? NP / Ice Beam / Shadow Ball / HP Fighting? NP / Ice Beam / Thunder / Psychic? Anything Doe S doesn't hit super-effective will survive. It's also wiped out by any sort of priority such as Arceus's Extremespeed or Giratina's Shadow Sneak.


In other words Nasty Plot seems useless to me.

I think that with a focus sash, good prediction, and/or a passed sub, Deo-A and Deo-N could both make excellent NP users and be amazing.

Simple: Set up with NP and then murder everything in your path. A passed sub would be nice, but the sash makes it optional. Psyshock is for STAB and hitting the pink blobs, and then Shadow Ball+HP Fighting is unresisted.
