A Maractus Musical! (714)

I'm sure that if Musicals were a main quest then they'd involve more than what we get. Though they'd probably just have battle rounds and then feel too much like rehashed Pokemon Contests anyway, so maybe it's still a good thing that they're not a main part of the series.
I'm confident that the writers could've made Pokemon Musicals different from Contests if they tried. They simply seemed put off by that activity, which is why we got this insipid Maracache plot instead.

A more fun and relatable performance episode than any of the X/Y ones. Of course I'm watching the Japanese version for the actually good Best Wishes experience.

Now that you mention it, the performance in this episode did seem very similar to TryPokaron performances, which makes me wonder if TryPokaron was inspired by Musicals.

It wasn't bad at all. Just not extremely mind-blowing. The dancing was nice, though. The Maractus had pretty cute voices, although I didn't care for Toby's, and the whole group of Grass Pokemon performers in training reminded me of a couple of Johto filler episodes. It was kind of cool to see a triple battle in the anime, especially since Snivy got a chance to battle.

Now that you mention it, this episode's plot was basically a carbon copy of the Kireihana filler episode from early Jouto. Even the rhythm training theme was the same.

An episode about Musicals starring the worst grass types in the Unova series made this episode feel like a chore to watch. I don't know anyone who likes Maractus so watching three of them jump around trying to get into the rhythm made the episode feel like anesthetic.
