A Relay in the Sky! (880)

Between this episode and last, I love how Hawlucha and Fletchinder worked together to help Noibat learn to fly.

Here's a question for those who are much more familiar with Japanese than me: Near the beginning, when the old man was explaining the rules and the course and everything, he said something unexpected that caused everyone to faceplant. I think they were assuming he was a sky relay veteran, so they asked him if he was entering too, and he said he can't because he doesn't have three Pokemon. Did I interpret that correctly?

No, he's never participated even once. That's the joke. It's funny.

So the group was aided by an old fan who's never done it himself before... Their luck sucks.

Does he give a reason why he hasn't participated in one?

It's like a baseball fan who only likes to watch the game but never participates in it for reasons.

Too old for your rubbish..
So over his entire life, this guy didn't think of capturing a weak bug type with his Noctowl and training it up to its final flying form? Idiot..

Couple things I didn't notice the first time I watched this episode:
-The name of guy with the Starly line is Ornis. He was probably named after ornithology, which is the study of birds. I know it's an English word but they use English words (and words from other languages) in the Japanese version all the time.
-The old man's name is Oiseau, which means "bird" in French. So that's yet another French reference in the XY series.

I loved that sequence with everyone cheering "go!" as Noibat catches up to Starly. Reminds me of the togetherness shared by the XY group, which is the reason I love this series so much.

At the same time, I was so sad Noibat didn't win. But Ash and company's reactions were so great. They didn't even mention that they lost and were just happy for the effort.

this is a Nessa x Sonia stan account ✨
This aired in Canada already. I assume Mega Evolution III was skipped and aired Noibat's capture.

I don't know if I'm a fan of the narrator voicing COTDs. It sounds so out of place, like he's going to go into a voiceover.

I enjoyed this episode a lot though. Team Rocket's involvement was comical when Pumpkaboo hitchhiked in Altaria and when Meowth fell apart. The ending was a good message too, showing that losing can still provide development.

A so so episode. Near the end of the relay what happened to the other racers? All of them except for the leaders seemed to fade away into the background..

Loved this episode, probably would have loved it more had Noibat won.
I loved all of Team Rocket's disguises during the race and thought it was hilarious Pumpkaboo hid in Altaria's wing. Same with Hydreigon crashing through the forest and knocking out most of the competition along with itself.
Hawlucha's a great mentor for Noibat.

Of course the birds + bat didn't trust the old guy. He was Dr. Eggman in disguise.

The way this episode was structured was...weird. Conveniently enough, there's a sky relay that requires three flying-types. Oh look, Ash has three. TRio then blasts off into the sky...and then somehow the angle of their blasting off changes so drastically and conveniently that they end up taking a disguised Wobbuffet several miles away from their location in a straight line.

Then the shots of every checkpoint reveal that anyone else who wasn't Ash and the Starly Guy weren't going to make it through the first part (seeing as the Starly team and Ash's team were seen without other competitors) before the clumsy Hydreigon (remember when it used to be such a huge menace in BW whenever it appeared?) stopped everyone with a rain of apples in the forest.

TRio was actually really well disguised that they looked younger than usual, but somehow, not even the Starly Guy can tell at close sight that the Pelipper? in the lead had a freaking rocket coming out of its butt.

By the way, that old man not being able to catch a second flying-type... That's outright sad by this world's standards, isn't it?

Oh well. At least Noibat learned a lot from Papalucha.

I'll agree, it was an oddly formed episode, given the circumstances. Guess that's why I didn't take a lot from this episode. Noibat not winning the race was slightly shocking, but it made sense. Being a new flying rookie compared to a trainer who had been winning consecutively. Although, it made the episode end on a mild send off.

The old man was, shockingly, not voiced by Mike Pollock, but by Wayne Grayson. Weird, I thought I could heard Dr. Eggman in the old guy's voice.

This was a decent episode. It definitely had its moments and I like how Ash treats TR as just a nuisance in this episode.

l actually wasn't interested in watching this week. i guess that means i've lost interest in the XY series. This hasn't happened since Diamond and Pearl

God-king
Yknow, watching the dub is always a sure-fire way to remind myself that I really shouldnt be as invested in the show as I currently am.

Anyways, what a joke of an epiosde. One would think that a development episode would actually feature development, but I guess Noibat getting the bulk of it's flying training offscreen. Hawlucha continues to be overhyped in everything it does, despite getting almost rekt by meowth of all things, and fletchinder didnt even get enough screen-tile to talk about, althrough it obviously did better than the others.

I also cant help but wonder if aææ pf TR's talking about a potential noivern is mean-spirited trolling, or set-up to one of the most rushed evolutions in the series, althrough I forgot talking smack about Noivern is a death-sentence given how many stans it has.
