A Sandshrew's Storm! An Ice Hole Double Battle!! (1023)

Lillie already won a one on one battle way before Serena, Serena hasn't and her only win was a double battle lol

They still seem to be doing the whole mostly one sided rule for the girls' battles which castrates how developed they are (heaven forbid the girls and their cutesy Pokemon TAKE damage :p), though unlike Serena, they are at least forcing Lillie to use some slither of tactics in battle to keep the upper hand, not just 'Dodge!' and 'Use *signature attack*' which discards any sort of unique battle style and usually makes things very boring.

The only tactical thing that Lillie did was use Aurora Veil and Hail. It didn't active Sandshrew's two abilities that work when it hailing. Also it felt more like brute force after that

Well, this episode was really nice, with Lillie getting some great development in the battling aspect; truth be told he really looked a badass fighting that powerful wild Tyranitar with Snowy that Alolan Sandshrew, simultaneously commanding two Pokemon as the same time as in a double battle, and managed to defeat that wild Tyranitar. Just as I always thought, the Ice Stone was instrumental in evolving the Alolan Sandshrew into Alolan Sandslash, not Shiron. But, on my, Lillie got an Icium-Z!!! Never expected this to happen TBH, that was great! :) I always had the feeling that the anime would showcase her an Ice type specialist rather than Fairy, and that's what is happening.

And last of all, thanks to Chargabug, Lillie gets an Ice Stone too! Well, Snowy looks like not quite ready in its mind to evolve yet, but well, indications are pretty clear that it would evolve in the future.

Overall, great episode, Lillie got a lot out of this. 8/10.

Um, do I need to remind that Serena's Sylveon pretty much did all the work in that battle and Pikachu hardly did anything? Yep, the credit goes mostly to Serena there.

I disagree with that because I felt Pancham and Braixen could have taken down that Tyranitar because they have more team work

They mostly just spammed the same attacks however, and they still had the same 'too cute to take damage' clause most of the time which similarly sucked out any tension in their battles. They likely would have defeated the Tyranitar, though it's questionable whether they would have made it look remotely like an accomplishment.

Through a miracle evolution however, before then Eevee was getting toasted as badly as Pikachu. It's almost always lore that when a Pokemon evolves they're allowed to curb stomp their opposition for power display, even if they're often downgraded the following battle.

I wonder why the topic here went to " who is better Serena vs Lillie"

This episode is about Lillie and her development for future upcoming episodes.

Mostly due to XY and SM's commonly unimpressive battle record for the female protagonists turning it into a 'who's worse' argument.

WAIT! Lillie was about to give Snowy the ice stone to evolve so would this be more of a parallel to Lillie and her mom of evolving their Pokemon. Also if Snowy evolves then the people can't do anymore, "MARKETING!" on Alolan Vulpix.

Which is better than what Lillie did in this battle though. Serena legitimately knocked out two Pokemon in Miette's Slurpuff and James's Inkay, a.k.a., 2 wins for her and Sylveon at once. And Lillie, despite battling quite well in this episode, did not legitimately knock out Tyranitar.

But it was still a completely plot driven win that Serena got through dumb luck, while Lillie has at least been forced to be half way clever with what she has at times. It's like saying Serena has more over Lillie because she thrashed Team Rocket a million times more than her. What's a win worth if it's hardly even an accomplishment in the first place?

Ah, I see. Then I can also say that Lillie managing to fend off Tyranitar by battling it was also plot driven as well, since without that the episode wouldn't have made sense. Terms like plot-driven or PIS are very dumb to use to discredit someone's performances/feats in this anime, because everything in this anime happens because of plot.

Boring and underwhelming episode imo. The group getting separated felt lame, and then it was a lot of boring stuff about finding a way out, before Lillie got stuck again and had to take on Tyranitar.

Speaking of that Tyranitar, that battle was really ridiculous. I get Aurora Veil helping Vulpix and Sandshrew defensively, but how on earth did a couple of measly attacks from Sandshrew send Tyranitar tumbling, and cause it to run away. Lillie getting an Ice Stone was kind of expected, but that Icium Z was super undeserved. (People will probably bring Jessie up, and yes, I had mentioned that the way Jessie got her Mimikium Z was also stupid). Equally expecting Lillie's Z Ring to happen in the most convenient of ways possible.

Episode scores a 4.5/10. It was dull, and overall just felt like a drag.

Lillie at least used a semblance of her own smarts and abilities to pull through however. Not a great deal, but something to say her win was her own doing. It was a dumbed down challenge, but not ENTIRELY down to 'because the plot said so' like most times Serena won despite never changing or improvising AT ALL.

My general opinion for 'plot driven' scenarios is when you could have put any random schmuck in the same scenario and things would have played out exactly the same, while 'character driven' is when things play out differently according to whatever character is doing it.

At least it took Serena not 80 episodes to catch a new pokémon. That is the sad part. The Icium-Z felt kinda out of the blue. And not evolving A. Vulpix because it is popular is kinda lame. A. Vulpix is the Pikachu 2.0.

Let's be real though, people would have been mad if they evolved Shiron in today's episode either way. I'm sure that Lillie will evolve it during Necrozma arc sometime to take on Nihilego or a dragon type ultra beast, Shiron obviously doesn't think it's ready to evolve yet which really, it was only an egg 60 odd episodes ago and Rowlet hasnt evolved yet and Litten only just evolved and has shown to be more mature so dont worry, its better then absolutely nothing coming out of this episode

Well 80 and counting, cause Lillie hasn't caught a second Pokémon yet.

I wonder if it's going to be a parallel to the whole Pikachu and Thunderstone story, where Vulpix eventually shuns the Ice Stone and refuses to evolve, just like Pikachu did.
