A Three-Round Rival Battle! Aim Towards Tomorrow!! (878)

Scottie also reveal that he met steven and he hopes to train treeko and one day use mega sceptile to which Ash looks at pikachu in shock, "Sceptile can mega evolve!!!"

He would have been so shocked had this been any pokemon, but he was and he looked straight at Pikachu (the only character in this series besides ash who knows Ash has a sceptile)

Normally when ash sees a pokemon that he has previously trained or been in company with he doesn't show any sign of recalling his own said pokemon. This time he does, not clearly but it can be interpreted that way.

what do you guys think, i certainly feel this is a hint that he will be using mega sceptile in kalos

Soaring Pikachu

Cool Trainer
I got a teacherly kind of vibe from Ash as he gave the apprentice some advice.

The battle, I will rate as slightly above average. It would have been nice to see more done with a clash of blades between the grass lizard and water frog but I thought the rest was handled well.

It was pretty stupid that the notebook was lost just like that. We all saw clearly how Sawyer did not drop the book when he fell. He was even seen putting it back on his vest's pocket as he got up, but then we see it fall flat on the bridge. Then TR just immediately assume it's a rare notebook and never bother to look forward at the group mere meters away to connect the dots...

News travel fast that Steven became the champion and dethroned Wallace, it seems.

Seriously. Sawyer fought a Fairy-type and got schooled yet he owns one that should be relatively stronger? Never mind. He really needs that notebook...to dot down how the hell it knows Electro Ball at all.

Poor Sawyer. He was Ash's ***** the moment the battle started, and not even some evolution from DEM passion let Grovyle land a single blow. That's what he gets for not starting badge hunting at the same time as Ash.

I was really impressed that they said Steven's full name (then again, the Japanese version did, too). Marks the first time in the English dub. And once again, Andrew Paull reprises his role as the Hoenn Champion in Sawyer's flashback, so that was cool.

Even though I thought the Japanese version of this episode was funnier, I still got a good laugh out of it this time around.

The battle at the end was pretty good, too.

A decent episode, I suppose.

I know I'm very annoying talking about the music but 3/19 Japanese tracks were kept. Well done... Keep the generic boring tracks coming. And please, no silence anytime. We can't handle it.

At least they replaced Getter BanBan with the instrumental version of the English opening.

See this is how Ash is supposed to be all the time playing the mentor role to up and coming trainers, not like he was in Black and White smh, it does feel good to see Ash winning consecutive battles and hope it continues with Fletchinder getting some more wins because it sure needs it

I like all the references to Hoenn, especially Steven, but I wish they referenced the episode where Ash met Steven. Ash acted as if he has only heard of Steven but never met him. On top of that, in the episode where Ash met Steven, it was never once said that Steven was the Champion. It would have been so great if Ash just had a moment after he heard Clemont say he's the Hoenn Champion, where Ash could get excited and say, "Wait, I never knew he was the Champion!" But, it would appear that Ash has since learned off-screen about Steven's true identity. Much wasted potential there.

Blame it on negative continuity

The writers, at the time, most likely were told ahead of time that Wallace would be the champion, and thus they never said he was the champion when he met Steven.

I hate how Ash didn't remember Steven....

And the rival battle felt kinda pointless, but at least we got to see Hawlucha beat another Fairy.

I know. I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up, but it seemed like such an obvious step to take, and wouldn't have been difficult to implement in any way.

The Champion can change in the show just like it does in the games.

Yeah, same. I was genuinely expecting the Friend Safari music to be playing during the search montage, as well as the Pokemon Center theme in Scottie's flashback. Shame.

And shouldn't this thread's title be changed by now? I'm wondering why it still hasn't yet.

I already had a feeling about Sawyer in "A Fashionable Battle", but now I'm confident in this theory I have: Sawyer is going to end up being Cameron of the Kalos league Ash's big Kalos league rival who ultimately defeats him towards the end of his win streak.

More (possible) ORAS/Hoenn promotion with showing that Sawyer has a Treecko/Grovyle, and having flashbacks to when he met Steven (Shiny Metagross, and all).
Note: I'm not saying that last bit as if it's a bad thing.

Good episode overall. The battle was okay, but it was a tad too one-sided. But that's due to Sawyer not paying attention to the battlefield.

The references to Hoenn, including Steven Stone, were all nice.

If Sawyer ends up going from a new trainer who was beaten easily to Ash, to an expert trainer able to beat Ash in the league, that would just be wrong. Even more wrong than Cameron in some ways. It might be interesting seeing how much Sawyer has grown, but it would also show that Ash has grown little to none. It would be detrimental to Ash's character (just like Cameron was). It would be better to see the two fight in the league, and have Ash barely beat him, but then lose in the following round to someone who is more worthy of beating him (like Alain).

Haha, at least Sawyer is clever and willing to learn. And at least if Sawyer defeats Ash, I won't feel as bitter about it.

I feel sorry for Sawyer - He does his best and really wants to be a better trainer but Ash was just better. Even when Treecko evolved it just couldn't cut it. Ash and Sawyer have quite a good chemistry together. It was nice to see Ash encouraging and supporting him. It's a pity Sawyer didn't stick around. Ash would have been a good mentor.

Pikachu's battle was excellent - Poor Bagon got his butt kicked. Way to go Pikachu.

There's an apparent lack of continuity in cannon here. Ash and Pikachu met Steven stone in Hoenn during the early AG saga and he wasn't the champion then. In DP it was stated that Wallace was Hoenn champion. Steven must have become champion sometime after that. Still I think Jessie is way out of her league thinking Steven will marry her. She should focus on winning her next Showcase.

8/10 - Go Pikachu
