About Item Balls

TTar-X

<-Don't wake him up!
As you know in every pokemon RPG game thus far there have been item balls scattered throughout each region and each contains an item of course. Well I was wondering what you people would think if in DP the item balls were replaced by the actual item. For example, instead of going to an item ball and pressing the A button to obtain a potion, the actual mini "pic/sprite" of the potion is lying there so you already know what item it is before you snatch it up. This idea came to mind after Fr/Lg came out in which each item has a small sprite to represent it, like how a TM looks like a small disc.
I wouldn't mind this idea as opposed to just the same looking item balls scattered throughout the Shinou region that all look like a basic pokeball. :-/

Anyways what are your thoughts?
Post your thoughts w/o taking the possibility of the this being implemented to DP under consideration. Thank you ^_^

If you played Xd/PC you would know they are really chests not actually Pokeballs. Doubt it will happen.

This makes a lot more sense than everything looking like pokeballs. I'm all for it. I remember this being one of my first irritations in RBY.

If you can see the item beforehand it takes away the purpose of it being a surprise. You're not supposed to be able to see what item is so you end up busting your *** for nothing. Otherwise if you could see what it is, you'd know not to go a certain route where they might force you into a battle.

No I'm afraid I've never played XD but that is still the same difference if you ask me.
I'd also like to hear what you think about the idea without you saying whether or not you think it'll happen or not. Much appreciated. ;-)

That goes for all posters here on this thread. Post your thoughts w/o taking the possibility of the this being implemented to DP under consideration. Thank you ^_^

My only gripe with the item balls is that they look like Pokeballs. It's nice to be surprised in finding a Nugget or something, but if I were to pick up something that looks like a Pokeball on some route, I expect to find a Pokemon in it, not to have it turn out being some Potion.

Also, I don't like how they are limited in quantity. In theory, trainers are using these route, which means they will drop things. Perhaps, every so often, someone should drop an item somewhere on the route, and you will have the option of going back and fetching that item. However, it'd be your duty to patrol the area for new items, and they could range from things like Pokeballs (very common) to Earthquake TMs (exceedingly rare).

Keeping them uniform in appearance, but changing that appearance would satisfy me the most of any plan.

Well, there are 2 problems with changing the traditional item balls:

1. It would create plot holes with respect to past titles. The item containers can't just randomly be different without any reason.
2. It'd kill the Voltorb gag, where you think you're picking up an item but actually end up engaging in a battle, instead. This is an RPG classic. (Pandorite in Mario RPG, anyone?)

I'm also of the opinion that "why fix what isn't broken"

items in the overworld looking like pokeballs works fine... and the Voltorb gimmick never gets old either.

used Metronome!
I've always disliked the use of the Poké Ball as the universal overworld for items, but in reality it takes away the element of surprise. When all the items look the same we never know what we'll pick up, and vigilant players are rewarded for searching through the crud to find the goodies.

Cool idea, but how would the TMs/HMs still work if they were lying around on the ground? Wouldn't they get all scratched up or accidently crushed by clumsy trainers walking by?

LoL yeah IRL but not in the video game world ;-)
Maybe the TM's could be enclosed in a case or chest.
About the "element of surprise", that is a valid defense to keep item balls like they've always been however, don't most players want to snag every item ball in the game no matter how good or bad it is? I would.

I like this idea a lot. It would make more sense for some random item to be lying on the ground. But why would something be in a chest? Yes, it is a game, but this would make more sense and more "real world-like." But then again, this isn't the real world. Still, it's a cool idea nonetheless.

I don't think it'll happen. In 99.9% of RPGs items are kept in chests of some sort, and in Pokemon the item balls are the chests. It's a tradition, and every gen we've had Voltorb/Electrode disguised as items. I don't think they'll be getting rid of that any time soon.

I doubt GF will change the item-ball appearance. 1) they don't want you to know what the item is in advance (Is it a nugget or another stupid voltorb?) and 2) they want a simple image for the item 'chests'.
Pokeballs is the simplest most normal thing in the poke-world so thats what they choose. If it was up to me, I would choose the items to be represented by some sort of small box or container with the pokeball logo on it. Doubt that'll happen though.

Chances are that it won't happen because they can't trick you with Voltorbs, a tradition there for so long already. It might be a nice change though.

Hush, keep it down
I like the item balls the way they are, but improvements could be made still. I like the idea of finding items other trainers dropped, for one.

One thing I'd do is add to the Pokémon that can ambush you, like what was done in G/S/C for the Team Rocket base. Add more round Pokémon like Koffing, Geodude, et al. is what I say. If it's always Voltorb/Electrode, you know to always put a Ground-type in the head of your party if you know the areas the trap Item Balls are.

Back I guess??
I didn´t like this idea. There´re more disvantage than advantage... or there´re no advantage o_O most of them already posted.

I think it would be best to keep it as is. It is very hard to make a detailed item, the size of your charachter. (move items around in your pc, you`ll see what I mean.) This idea has crossed my mind as well, but it would, beside be an undetailed mess, be hard to seperate from the land, itself. try to find a full heal on a beach, or a mirracle seed in a forest. And a hard stone would look like a rock.

BUT! maybe some things, like miracle seeds, may work if they are buried in the gound, and it becomes a golden sun type thing

they should keep it as it is D:

If they changed it then they couldn't trick us with electrodes, so I doubt they would...
And I always thought of the item balls as being an explanation of how you can carry so much stuff in your bag o_O
