Akira anyone?

I got it for my PSP (the umd anime video)... and it was awesome... im a bit confused about it... why did the army and politicians make akira seem like a mystery if they new he (or whatever it is) was underground?

My most favourite part was when Kaneda and Tetsuo were fighting and they General used the space laser thing... what was yours?

Ah, one of my personal favorite anime movies. While the manga is easily better than the anime (you can't fit two thousand plus pages into two hours, obviously), the anime is still bloody amazing in its own right. One of the first anime that I saw in which the ending was slightly ambigious and you had to think about its meaning.

And to the seriously ignorant, Akira is one of the most influencial anime/manga of all time. Yes, arguably more so than your precious Dragon Ball.

Well, [spoil]they were more or less referring to the fact of the project itself, not Akira. They didn't want another incident to spark another war, so the politicians wanted to cancel the experimentation on children. Although, there methods of going about it was more or less satire on how governments traditionally act or fail to, as this was one of the more important themes that Otomo tried to get across.[/spoil]

Personally I have a few favorite scenes, such as [spoil]the opening in Neo Tokyo when it it felt like you were watching a live action movie for the first five minutes (animation is amazing, as everyone agrees), the hospital scene where Testuo starts to really see more of the effects that his powers have created, and near the end when Kaneda is witnessing Tetsuo's past. Powerful stuff.[/spoil]

I was wondering if a thread would be made for this ^_^

I recently borrowed Akira from my library, and I thought it was bloody amazing, especially that Tokyo scene from the beginning. The story was incredible, and I liked the fact that it was gritty. I've never seen an anime movie like it.

Fav parts? Probably when [SPOIL]Tetsuo is taking revenge on the city with his psychic powers as he searches for Akira[/SPOIL]. Oh, and I thought it was a great twist when he discovered that [SPOIL]Akira was long dead and the only thing that remained were small samples of his DNA[/SPOIL].

Plus, the ending was...thought provoking. I liked how it ended in such an abrupt way. It made me think.

All in all, one of the best anime movies I have ever seen. I'd give it 5 stars.

Ahhhh... thanks Helkorn it finally makes sense :)... ive watched it like 500 times and never understood that... i also though the end was really emotional... and kind of gave justice to Tetsuo with all the *stuff* that happened to him and all the *stuff* he did to others... i hope they make another movie... even though there wasn’t one in the past 20 years i think?

I cant get the mangas unfortunately... i live in crappy northern Ireland... hmmm... but there is the thing called the internet lol

(sorry for not usin the spoilers in the first post :S )

Akira is awesome man. like HK said, One of the most influential manga/anime ever. Even influenced some American hollywood movies.

Akira friggin' blows. Why it's held on this pedestal as being this great achievement in the history of anime is something I'll never understand. It's boring as hell, it has the worst soundtrack I've ever heard in ANY movie, and the vast majority of the violence is really overdone and seems to only be there just to make the movie more "edgy" and "cool." The movie doesn't have any memorable characters at all (the only reason I can remember Tetsuo's and Kanada's names is because they scream it to each other so much) and the movie's pacing makes //hack.sign look like it has A.D.D.

It does have some amazing animation, but other than that I can't get any enjoyment out of the damn thing.

I doubt any sequel or remake will be done. I can't even remember the last time Otomo did anything involving manga and/or anime. The movie that we have from 1988 is all we got animation-wise, and as for the manga it is completed and will never be done again.

If you are curious I could PM you the link to get the six volumes.

Compared to the manga I can say without a doubt that the movie can be regarded as crap in comparison, but then again that doesn't say much about the movie as a standalone.

I also can't completely understand as to why some people regard ecchi and shounen anime/manga series as the best entertainment ever produced. Go figure.

It's boring as hell,

Too subjective. The only thing that I felt dragged on about the movie was that it lacked an ultimate purpose as to why what was happening was happening.

it has the worst soundtrack I've ever heard in ANY movie,

I'm not too fond of it. It had its moments, but the majority of the critical parts of the movie did lack any depth in terms of BGM.

and the vast majority of the violence is really overdone and seems to only be there just to make the movie more "edgy" and "cool."

This is coming from someone who watches action/shounen anime, correct? Sorry, but the jackass part of me can't help but be amused by this.

As to my opinion on that, the violence didn't feel overdone to me, but I think my dad summed it up the best when I asked him about his thoughts on the movie: "... There were a lot of explosions."

The movie doesn't have any memorable characters at all (the only reason I can remember Tetsuo's and Kanada's names is because they scream it to each other so much)

Lack of character development that was done in the manga and couldn't transfer for two thousand pages from the original source. I don't watch it for memorable characters, just for the satire and themes.

and the movie's pacing makes //hack.sign look like it has A.D.D.

An extreme statement, but I have to agree upon it.

It does have some amazing animation, but other than that I can't get any enjoyment out of the damn thing.

Fair enough. If anything the animation is what the movie is known for, so as to say what matters about it... well, the animation, then.

I think that the movie is OK, but it doesnt make too much sence. I mean, it is never really explained who or what akira was, or what this incident is. I think that i need to read the manga. But at something like £16 each in my local shop and about 7 volumes, it might take me a while to save and buy them all.

As for my faviourite scene, I like the one where the motor bikes were driving past that car and through a bomb into the boot. I also like the flash bak of when Kaneda and Tetsuo first met.

That whole scene was ausome... and the one after if i remember corretly :)S) ,[SPOIL]the scene were the army shot at that guy and the blood erupted from him...[/SPOIL] that was, as Dogasu said, overdone... cool but overdone...

And HK that would be ausome if you could... thanks!

Six volumes of manga, to be exact. And for what is it worth, the does explain (in an ambigious way) about Akira and what not, but not as clearly (and as well) compared to the manga.

Heh, 'HK,' been a while since someone called me that... I miss acronyms.

Anyway, quick question before I do. Do you have something that can handle .tar files? Because the last three volumes available from that place are in that format.
