Alola Pokedex Discussion Thread

Eh, ragazzo!
The Pokedex has a few interesting features, such as the Rotom Pokedex form, and the different island Pokedexes.

The QR code scanner will be another new feature for the Pokedex. The full details are yet to be known.

Discuss:

On the QR code scan, I think there can be different approaches. It could simply flag a Pokemon's location, but what if it cause a "swarm"?

QR Scans are a good thing, but can hurt gameplay.
You can easily scan all QR codes online and see whether or not each Pokemon is found somewhere in Alola.

I guess I'll keep my hands away from this feature until post-game.

I'm personally not really seeing the purpose of this QR scan thing. I guess it's just something for the younger audience who don't check Pokemon locations online, but at the same time, where else would you get the QR code?

From a friend who doesn't want or know how to explain? I would have loved this for things like chimecho back in RS.

On different approachs maybe it can activate version exclusives?

But rather than handing your 3DS over to your friend so they can scan a QR code, wouldn't it just be easier to show them the location in your own Pokedex?

I think the purpose of the QR codes might be so you and your friends can work on the Pokedex together. Like, if your friend finds a Pokemon you like, he can give you the QR code for it and you can go find it.

Anyway, the Rotom Dex seems like it has a lot of potential for useful features. Dexnav functionality should be an obvious one if they can bother to carry it over from ORAS, it already looks like they're setting up to include it. It's also described as being a new way for people and Pokemon to communicate, so it should have several communication features. Maybe a video chat feature (there is an earlier clip showing Kukui trying to communicate over video), some type of translator that allows us to talk to Pokemon, and the usual PSS/Super Training/Pokemon Amie.

I'm curious as to if the Rotom will EVER be able to leave the dex. For example in the story it leaves the dex to protect you, or if it can remain in the dex as a new official battle form with electric/steel. Is it considered your pokemon? Or just a wild one? How will traded pokemon communicate with you? Will red/blue pokemon react in a special way with these communication options?

from what we know we can share QR codes mwhich reveals location kinda similar to dexnav tells you how close you are to it. also it registered it in the dex even if you dont battle it

QR codes might function as a "mirage spot"-like feature. Giving you access to rare or not locally found pokemon in hidden groves or such.

See, I get the feeling that the QR code thing won't come into play until the postgame, unless the Alola dex is absolutely huge (Talking full Kalos dex size huge, so around 450+).

Fire trainer
I wonder if they would introduce a new Eeveelution that's connected to this new feature similar to how Sylveon was linked to Pokemon Amie.

I mean, looking at the artwork made for this feature, it showed a kid looking all shocked as different Pokemon came out of QR codes on things like drink bottles. So perhaps it serves a similar purpose to Gates to Infinity's Magnagate system, where you scan a circular object in the real world and get a dungeon from it.

Of course in this case it would be a Pokemon.

I'm not sure if I fully understand the QR function (never have really), but couldn't something like that be used to distribute certain Pokemon, like some rarer ones or legendaries or events? Scanning certain QR codes could trigger something ingame for more interactive approaches on distributions. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see it in more detail.

I don't think it functions like that.
From what I understand, the only purpose of the QR code is to identify a specific location of a Pokemon in Alola. Nothing else.

"By scanning in special QR Code patterns you can register Pokémon of the Alola region to your Pokédex and find out where they live. If you scan in the QR Code for a Pokémon that you haven’t yet caught, you can check its habitat and search it out." -Official site

So, even if you scan all QR codes, only Pokemon native to Alola will be recognized.
Version-exclusive will obviously only be available on their respective versions.

This does not function like Mystery Gift where it gives you an actual Pokemon.

We have arrived.
Not sure I understand why this isn't just a part of the "New Gameplay Features/Mechanics Discussion & Speculation Thread" honestly..

But yeah, I won't be using the QR Scanner until Post-Game.. but then I'm not sure what use it'd have, since I would have mostly seen all native Pokemon by that point, I feel..

The main purpose of this thread is to speculate on the possible Alola-native Pokemon listing.
Which Pokemon may be obtainable or not. Which will be version exclusives. Which Pokemon belong to which subDex, etc...

The Super Kid

The Underdog :(
What would be cool, would be if Pokemon had different locations for each trainer, so the QR codes would actually be useful and sites like Serebii can't list a "one size fits all" location for the Pokemon.

Indifferent to QR scan thing. I don't know if maybe something more can be done with it to make it similar to DexNav, but right now it just sounds like you scan a code to learn a location. I rather just find what's around by exploring myself. Plus QR codes have always gave me difficulty.

I'm not surprised the Pokedex is split up, I was pretty sure we'd get four island sections and each has it's own Pokedex and it seems to be the case. People have been throwing around 300 Pokemon in the Pokedex overall based on the 1%, I hope some way it'll be more because I simply like to have a large selection to choose from, albeit, 300 is still a lot.

I don't care too much what older Pokemon are in the regional dexs, but I hope they and the new Pokemon get proper placement since there are always a handful of Pokemon that just kind of get the short end of things. Also not sure if I want some of my faves in the dex or not, because on one hand I would love to go through the region with 6+ of my favorite Pokemon, but I would also like to use Pokemon I haven't really used before.

I hope the Pokedex will have more use overall as well, it seems to function as a map as well so there's that, but I don't know, having more info on the Pokemon, maybe have some kind of mini game in it, I'd just like more reason to use the thing.

One thing I would like to bring up is the "Melemele" Pokedex that probably indicates more than one Pokedex. There are basically 4 main islands, so I'm guessing there are four regional Pokedex entries. I'm guessing that the Pokemon are mutually exclusive in each region, not dissimilar to Kalos.

One odd "anti-trend" was Magikarp being less available. The first four generations had Magikarp in any body of water. Gen 5 only had them as either a gift or in the nature preserve (hinted to be far away). Gen 6 had them only in the central region, while the sea and mountains had other Pokemon to fish for. It wouldn't be hard for Gen 7 to continue this oddity.

I think this QR code is a great thing, especially for younger kids to who play on recess at school or play with a lot of friends in general, who don't go online to find out all the extra information. I personally won't use it that much, probably just try it out with my bf since that's all I play with, but for someone who plays with lots of friends, this will just be an added bonus. Oh How the good the old days were, playing pokemon and not having looked everything up because I had dial up and never got to go online or thought I needed to :p
