Amvs

Mods, if this is in the wrong area, please move it.

This has bothered me for a while and I need a definite answer. Are AMVs legal? I've heard it is and isn't. It might be since it's non-profit and can be considered free publicity; but it's said it isn't legal because of the music used.

Technically it is, technically it isn't. If you're using DVDs to make AMVs, it's fine. Why? You're using video content from something you purchased and you're not trying to make a profit off of it, nor are you using actual unedited content and distributing it (i.e. full episodes).

What part of it doesn't make it legal? People who use fansubs and TV rips. Nothing says "CHEAP *******" more than seeing the ol' Cartoon Network logo on the bottom of the screen or fansubs scrolling about as you try to focus on the song and video. They become distracting for one, and you're using an illegal copy that you didn't even purchase the actual content to begin with.

Then comes the music issue. That's iffy since music can be lifted off of CDs easily while people also simply grab them off the net. Most bands who make the music really don't care.

So, it is legal to watch them as well? If so, I feel alot better now. Thank you so much, Ed.

Yeah, it's legal. In fact, anime conventions also host contests for people to make and show off their AMVs during the conventions.

I've yet to see television rips used for any AMVs myself, though, I guess that's due to the fact that any AMVs I do watch are series that either have only appeared on television briefly and after the DVDs have been around for a LONG time, or else not at all. I do find it annoying when encountering subtitles on the screen when watching them, though, since it is so damn easy for them to be turned out. Luckily that's a rare occurrence, but it's an annoying one nonetheless.

Anyway, Chris already explained the legal crap well enough, so I'm out.
