Anime Dubs

Yet again, I just don't understand. I think some anime fans take dubs too seriously. I don't mind subs and manga, but I wouldn't be that angry with dubs. Some fans are so angry, they want dubs to be off the air. They may even want subs to replace dubs on TV. I'll even go for subtitles and Manga, but I don't want to go too far as to kill a dub off the air. I figure some people like dubs, and anime fans think they're nuts. I think they should just let it aside and not let dubs bother them. Next thing you know, there will be an angry mob protesting against bad dub companies. (most peferillaly 4Kids Entertainment) Do you know what I mean?

I don't know why people hate dubs just because they *are* dubs. I mean, sure there's some bad ones, but there's also very very good ones.

Agreed. I really hated how many people were automatically assuming that the Naruto dub would be bad before it went on the air. (I actually had a good feeling about the dub.) It turned out fine. Of course, things wouldn't have been better if everybody automatically assumed that the dub would be really great because we wouldn't have seen it yet, but still...

That's the worst and most unnecessary idea I've ever heard. Especially if it's not an official sub.

@-@ sometimes dubbies can get annoying ONLY liking the English cheaply/crap made music (Some Sailor Moon dubs song's weren't that bad like My Only Love and a few others) some of the dub Pokémon music is stupid and quite pointless (Misty's Song, cute but not apart of the shows original plot)

I did not mind what Viz did too Naruto they made a good choice in voice actors and I'd rather Viz get rights then 4kids any day! i wish Viz got One Piece not 4kids.

I'm not saying i hate all dubbed anime just bad dubbing companies like DiC, 4kids, Nelvada (The really messed up Card Captor Sakura) and Cloverway, that screw around with the plot or change it so much that it doesn't seem like anime.

I don't understand why people fail to realize that dub-only fans can be just as insane as sub-only fans.

All the crazies aren't just on one side, y'know.

It's funny how as the years have gone by, people who watch original or subtitled anime have become such snobs while they've been mocking the folks who watch dubbed anime over the years.

The problem is that those certain anime fans who watch subtitled or original anime generally think that they're better than every other anime fans who watches dubbed anime, and put down all dubbed anime because of the ones they see on TV (generally anime that are dubbed by 4Kids or that early Saban dub of Dragon Ball Z, Nelvana's Cardcaptors, etc.), when most of the dubbed anime that are released straight onto DVDs are pretty good. They get the idea that all anime dubs are bad and act like snobs/elitists about it, which is pretty damn retarded.

So.....elitists suck. XP

Typically the people you'll find on the 4kids.tv forums, who's main vocabulary tends to be, "hi i liek sonicx is so cool" with a double-side order of "luffy is cool becos he is funnie."

Although I suppose most of these kids are seven years old, so I can't blame them for that. ^^;
Poor unknowning kids. They don't know the stuff they're watching is a low-quality piece-of-junk. :<

When it comes right down to it, it's all because of the English-speaking world's censorship laws. While some dubs were meant to be for DVD, others were going to be put on the air but had to be kid, parent, and company friendly. Seriously, do you want kids at a young age learning about sexual stuff at that age or let them hear swear words off the yin yang? It also depends on how good the voice-actors are. Most of the voice actors in dubs are veterans when it comes to doing what they do best. Those who are new to the business try their best but start out a little...rough but they get better as they continue.

Back to the cencorship law topic, there are parents out there who would want some anime off the air for decent and logical reasons. For instance in Yu-gi-oh, there are many episodes that show religious symbols being used for purposes the religions who support them unhappy. There are also instances where churches, temples, etc are being torn, burned, or destroyed in many anime and that would make religious folk even madder.

Do you get what I'm saying here folks? It's bogged down to censorship laws and voice actor performance that people judge.

OK, I think that there are some really good dubs out there, and I would much rather watch anime in a language that I speak rather than having to read subtitles. I do not think there is anything wrong with dubs if they keep the story right and everything.

What I dislike is when they make unessasary(sp?) edits to the shows and take thinks out for no reason, which is the case for one piece (see sig).

All in all, if I have a choice of watching a dub and a sub, I would much rather watch the dub as long as the story is the same. And I hope that people would stop assuming that it is going to be bad just cos it has been translated.

I like a lot of dubs. There are some really bad ones and good ones. I like the good ones, I hate for instance 4Kids dubs other than Pokémon. So the dubs that I hate are ones with unnessesary edits.

Personally I do prefer subbed. But this is mainly because the voice actors seem to sound better imo. They put more feeling into their roles, some dubs do this too but not many that I can recall.

If all of this however becomes untrue then I will like them both just as much as each other. But at the moment subs.

I don't know why people automatically hate dubbed animes. I like dubs. I like watching dubs because I speak English and because they're on T.V. I like subs, too. Some people are just too quick to judge.

True, but the sub-only fans seem to be more common, or at least more boisterous.

Actually, there are alot of people who judge a dub without actually viewing it.

Really, it comes down to trying something before passing judgement.

For me, some series (like Samurai 7, Last Exile, etc.) can be more fulfilling to watch in the dub as I can view the action without shifting my eyes to the subtitles every few seconds. However, I always try to view the Japanese and English versions (and in some instances, Spanish) to compare and contrast for my own benefit. Therefore, I do not really favor one over the other because both usually share pros and cons.

I'm not an elitist! great now most are assuming I'm a snob!!! >
I don't like 4kids but sometimes i do like what they do (They picked a lot of good voices for the anime's they dubbed...just not Luffy but it could have been worse) I don't like the fact that Nelvada took EVERYTHING Japanese out of the show changed Japan to "Reedington" .

¬_¬ I'm not a snob i just prefer subs to dubs most of the time ok.

I watch the dub's before i judge them like for Tokyo Mew Mew aka Mew Mew Power, i got mad when the music, names and just about everything was changed not to mention most of the voices sounded the same but i did like Mint/Corina a bit more in the dub (I don't like snobby anime charies) I know MANY people where ****** about Naruto being in English "OMG VIZ SUX NARUTO IZ RUINED!!!!11!oneone!!1" or (I don't know who exactly got rights to Bleach) for when Bleach comes out in English "OMGZ BLEACH WILL B RUINED BY DA BAD DUB COMPANY"

Dub elitists are JUST as bad, if not worse.

You listed a ton of examples where sub fans make vague, incorrect generalizations about all dubs, but dub fans are just as bad. Snobby dub fans brag about how they're watching the show in their own language and think that anyone who would watch the show in Japanese with subtitles are only doing it to be "cool." I mean, there couldn't possibly be any other reason, right?

I've also seen dub fans make some VERY unfair comparisons between the Japanese version and the English version. I've lost count of the number of Dragon Ball Z fans who will watch the entire series dubbed and then watch one episode in Japanese and endlessly bitch about how "girly" Goku sounds or how the music isn't "exciting" enough in the Japanese version. The epitome of elitism is a fan comparing voices he's had 100+ episodes to get acquainted with (dub) to voices they've only heard in one episode (sub) and instantly dismiss the latter as being inferior. Sub fans and dub fans are equally guilty of this.

I'm just tired of dub fans being painted as the victims of sub fans' assaults when I've seen PLENTY of evidence supporting the idea that they aren't all just speaking out in self-defense.

Whoa, hold it. I said that those certain anime fans who watch subtitled or original anime, not all of them. o_O There are actually decent people who watch subtitled or original anime, who actually see dubbed anime as good and don't make idiotic statements about them.

Viz got the license to Bleach, by the way.

Yup, I don't know how many times I've seen dub elitists saying that Japanese seiyuus are bad at their roles and that the music doesn't fit the seen at all (even though the music was ORIGINALLY intended for it, I've mostly seen this alot of times aimed at the original version of Dragon Ball Z).

Even though both are equally annoying and snobby, I've seen alot more sub-elitists than dub-elitists. o_O

Dubs are okay. I dunno how people just don't see it like this: "There are good and bad dubs just as there are good and bad subs." =/ It's just the companies people~

I hate really crappy voices in dubs (namely Luffy from One Piece... I can't stand voices like that). I overall prefer dubs, because I don't sit there and pay attention to the show the entire time, I multitask. If something exciting is happening, I can look and see what's being said... in Subs, you have to read everything that's going on.

Lol, I do the same thing with subs too. Both when using the computer, i'll just have two windows. Split screen. Usually i'm playing Runescape and watching Anime.
