Anime Imports

Kez

Hoenn Champion
I used the search function, and looked at all of the threads on all 5 pages of this forum, but found nothing on this subject.

If I wanted to order volumes of anime from japan, what site, or place could i get them from? I think that i would rather watch these than the dubbed, and once my japanese gets better, i may think of doing so.

Thanks for any help.

Also: I know that this is kind of off topic, but what about manga? I mean, ordering it from japan.

Your best bet would be Amazon.co.jp. They offer discounts, especially if you've bought things from them before and they ship overseas.

Do note that Japanese DVDs are in the Region 2 format and that you will need either a Region Free DVD Player or a Region 2 DVD Player in order to view imported anime DVDs.

You can also purchase manga from them as well.

Do note that they do not ship video games overseas. :p

or you could see if there is a Kinoshiya Bookstore near you and get imports there. Depending on where you live that is. There are 3 of them near where I live: 1 in NYC, 1 in Edgewater NJ (near NYC), and one in Palisade mall Nyack, NY.

You can go here to buy imports. There are quite a few imports in there. You just have to do some looking.
Either this or Ebay.

I highly recommend NOT going to Discount Anime DVD (don't confuse this with Deep Discount DVD). DADVD isn't exactly legit, seeing as how they do import anime..bootleg DVDs, to be exact.

Thanks for the advice, but I am in the UK, and i do not know if they have them shops here.

Also, thanks EE for the advice, I will check there now. I did a search on the UK Amazon, and i thought that it would have told me internation ones as well, I guess that is not the case. Thanks again.

EDIT: Unfortunatly, the page will not lad up for me. I do not know what is wrong. Japanese pages usually work. Oh well. Are there any other sites?

EDIT (AGAIN): I have managed to get it working, but I do not understand yen. Can you give me a link to a site that converts yen to pounds sterling

XE is a pretty good currency converter. As for sites for anime/manga, I recommend Yesasia, and Ebay/Amazon are good sites to browse as well. CDJapan is good, though a bit expensive, but they usually deliver pretty quickly.

Sorry for the off topic, but I want to know what are the Region Codes (what are 1, 2, and 3)? Also, which DVD Player allows to automatically (or manually) play subtitles when watching jap DVD?

EDIT: Do jap audio with eng sub (jap DVDs) work on X-Box?

USA and i think Canada are region 1
Japan, China, Korea, etc are R2
i forgot who has region 3.

Region codes are codes allowing certain dvds to only play for that pecticulary region. a R2 dvd can't play on a region 1 dvd player.

What about X-Box? Do they play Region 2? (Such as Naruto in jap)

How do you play Region 2 DVDs in America?

Uh..usually Japanese DVDs do NOT come with English subtitles. It's very rare that they do. Most anime don't come with English subtitles and only special condition ones do (such as the Collector's Edition of the Fullmetal Alchemist movie, whereas the standard one does NOT come with subs).

Also, a US console will NOT play Japanese DVDs.

You either get a multi-region DVD player or you can get a modchip for your X-Box. I managed to get a multi-region player for only £20, while I modded my ps2 to play import games using Swap Magic. Swap Magic is pretty good since you don't have to open up the console to insert the 'magic keys' and use the software. I got it off Ebay for only £20 as well. :)

Just how will I find the modchip for X-Box? I searched for it and it came up nothing?

If you're on ebay try searching for 'modified x-box' or 'x-box chip' and you should get something. I don't know if you can get Swap Magic for it but you should be able to find something similar.

It came up nothing, but thanks for the help. So, I'll get region-free DVD player. Back to the topic.

You know, Naruto Box Set (All ep 1-177, jap audio with sub)? When I was browsing thru the ebay, I found out that it can be played on X-Box. In order to play Naruto (DVD), do I need regular or modified X-Box?

Another question, but kind of off topic. When uncut DVDs are released, do they have the original music and theme tunes? Or does it just mean unedited footage? And do they usually the option of watching it in japanese? I was just wondering, because i would only really consider getting the japanese DVDs if you cannot get them with subs in the UK (or order them from america)

Use a deputy service.

Deputy services, such as ShoppingmallJapan.com and Rinkya.com, will allow you to purchase items using Yahoo Japan Auctions and have them sent to the US.

Sometimes the rates on some of these importer sites are through the roof. Using YJ, you know exactly what you are going to get. You do have to pay transaction fees, but these are generally pretty small. I do not suggest using the services for auctions under 2,000 yen(Around US$18) since the fees and shipping can really add up, but, for large collections, etc., it really is ideal to have.

Another site that I like to use is Mandarake.co.jp. Mandarake doesn't charge any fees and they allow you to purchase manga, etc. on their sites.

That would depend on what region the box-set is and where your X-Boxis from. If you're from America and it's region 2 then yes you'll need to mod your X-Box. If it's Region 0 however, it should be able to play just fine on a regular console.

Sometimes it only means unedited footage, but usually it'll say in the bonus features if the original intros/endings etc are used ie like with the FMA dvds. Most DVDs do have the option of watching it in English or Japanese though, but best to check out the dvd's specs first. If you do want to order from America though, Playusais a pretty decent site.

Depends on which anime you're watching. If it's anything Dragon Ball related, the only one close will be Dragon Ball. Though they're uncut, Z and GT do not play the original Japanese music. Dragon Ball does at points have to omit vocal songs at some points in the episodes. FUNimation's definition of "uncut" is unaltered footage. That's about it.

Fullmetal Alchemist, as mentioned, uses the original music regardless of what language you're watching.

Most other anime use the original music if it features both languages.
