a friend like in R/S? big enemy like in FR/LG? a theif like in S/G? im hoping they will make it like the theif, he was so cool, breaking into a window to steal a pkmn wen he can get it for free XD. but anyone have ideas of what the rival will be like, how they act, where they appear maybe, and their pkmn?

Whatever happens, I don't want him to show up out of nowhere with his dorky theme or standing by helping you as a friendly rival. No, I want him to be more pernicious and "in-your-face". Preferably, I would love to see him ambush the protagonist in the most uneventful situations.
Example: you've just gone through a long stretch in the game and have just come to heal at the next town's Pokemon center. Now, I would want him to come up out of nowhere, shove you out of the way and go into the Center himself, heal up, then challenge you to a battle immediately afterwards. This is the attitude I want to see, just a wretched, vile, and cynical attitude never beheld before in any Pokemon game.
Of course, he would be a ruthless trainer. Expect his Pokemon to be at least five levels higher than yours, with strategies to counter those people who opt to train their starter or other Pokemon to exorbitant levels. In essence, he would adapt to your team. His team would change depending on your team. You pick up a Fighting type? Expect to see a Psychic Pokemon in his arsenal. Hmm, perhaps this custom tailoring of the team would make for a neat Champion.
And...*ssh* he has a secret identity. You'll find it out when you beat the game. :3

there was a thread about this a while while back... but I'll give my opinions on the matter, and what I'd like to see.
they should have multipule rivials... much like Wally and Brendan/May.
however, there are 6 different trainer sprites... when you begin the game, you choose your gender and then you name your character. Then you choose the rivials gender. Which has 2 different sprites from your character, a male and female one. Then you choose your rivial's name. As you progress through the begining of the game, you find that you have a second rivial who's the opposite gender of your first rival. (so if you chose a boy for your character and a boy for your first rivial, the second rivial would be a girl)
the first rival should be the traditional rivial that sports an arrogant additude during most of the game, but ends up seeing you as an equal. Though you still share a rivialy, abit a friendlier one. He/She chooses the starter that is stronger then yours.
the second one is a bit more meek. He/She kind of resembles Yellow from the pokemon manga, and is kind of like Wally or May. He/She looks up to you, an as you help him/her, she becomes a stronger rivial. He/She chooses the last starter remaining.
on a route near the begining of the game, you meet a lass type trainer who has a different sprite from other lasses. However, after overcoming a certain obstaicle later on and becoming famous, she starts to follow you and claim to be a fangirl of yours. She also gains the first form of your starter pokemon.
There may also be a dark rivial, much like GSC's rivial that later joins the evil team or something, but later repents his ways and helps you defeat it.

I want somebody thats not afraid to bash you,and in one point in the game,he steals your 2nd pokemon in the party and you have to get it back!that'd be wicked.
I'd like to see a more ambiguous rival like in G/S/C. He was your freind at one moments, your bitter enemy the next, and always ready to take you on in a battle. Not to mention he's the only one that showed any character development besides the half-rival, Wally.
I'd like to see your rival play a more pivotal role in the story (sparse as it may be), aswell.

I say it should be a thief, a prnakster, a joker and seriously opposes the evil team of D/P. It should be a girl (If youre a guy)-smart enough to evolve her pokemon, strong and a thief. She/he steals from you on 2 seperate occasions (Kinda like Blue on PokeSpecial Manga)

Well if I want a rival I want it to be really competetative plus I want it to be with the game for almost the end of the Pokemon league. Like you will battle him Befor the champion or some thing like that.Also I want a big scale tournament for the Pokamon League wher you battle random trainers in the toruney like in the anime and perhaps the winner gets a chance to battle the elite four. I hate the competition happening in Victory road.

Wally also wasn't like the one in G/S/C, I'd prefer a rival that would be actually hard to beat, and maybe kind of evil or something.

I really liked Eszett's idea. Loved the "secret identity" thing. What if...there was a trainer the opposite gender of yours, and in the beginning, you bumped into them on accident, and their Taillow's ball opened up and it flew away. He/She would be infuriated and would continue to challenge you until they get their Taillow back. In your last battle, He/She admits to you a secret. They have had their Taillow ever since the day you bumped into them; it flew back. They just really enjoyed spending time with you. They say this before the battle, and He/She simply has an all powerful Swellow.

Would be cool if you meet Allies/Enemies as you went along.
Say if you beat someone, they might think your strong and want to travel with you, or, they might be infuriated and 'secretly' follow you so they could one day beat you and get their revenge. Maybe they had an ally too, so you could have a 2v2 battle.

How about: as you are leaving the first town you hear a robbery. It is an evil black haired male (your rival) and two thugs, part of a crime syndicate. He challenges you to a fight to prove his dedication to the syndicate, only you beat him and he moans he has failed his first task for the syndicate.
Later on you will face the evil syndicate (much like TR, TM and TA) and at random points he will show up to defeat you. Sometimes he loans Pokemon from the boss of the syndicate and is tough to beat. As you progress he rises through the ranks of the syndicate and the last battle you have is for his leadership of the entire syndicate.
