34F: Tough Customers

You know a tough-guy store is doing well when the customers send the clerk packing... Stantler gets KO'd against Servine and thrown out. In the "Most aggressive" category, the Fighting-type Throh is also gone. Weird. Maybe it just ended up at the end of the line.

THIRTY-FOURTH FLOOR
More signs, more stores, more unbridled consumer greed. Jagged yellow letters, reading "Johnny Socket's", decorate the door to a retro-style diner on your left. Behind its checkered counter, a Galvantula flips burgers with three of its arms, fills drink cups with two more, gives a plate to a customer with one, shoves garbage off the counter with another, and waves to you with the last. It introduces itself as the original Johnny Socket. Wow, is everyone named John in this place?

There are just as many sockets in the electronics store next door, where Magneton had just been fixing the security settings on a router when some less technically-minded Face-Offers arrived. A much quieter battle takes place in the "Gothick Apparel Boutique", behind that one narrow, black door across the hall. In the goths' boutique, only the suspicious can survive...

A fountain stands in the centre of 34F; nearby, a Lumineon tosses in coin after coin, trying for good luck. It also appears as if a tour of the Neo Mall is about to begin, courtesy of a Mantine, who guarantees that anyone who bugs it will be thrown into oblivion.

Finally, the other end of the hall houses a dojo. Every Pokémon world just has to have at least one. Sawk and Zangoose easily shred its punching bags to bits, unaware that an even greater challenge is just about to come through the floor. Nearby, Primeape lifts weights, showing its prowess. For whatever reason, though, Hitmonlee just ends up talking about football anyway.

Crawdaunt has claws but little capacity for lifting, Venomoth gets a ketchup sad face on its burger at Johnny Socket's, and Basculin's luck just runs out.

THIRTY-FIFTH FLOOR
All right, what's the first sign going to say this time? You step out on 35F and a billboard draws you to a store called "OutsideWorld." Oh, great... not another bad imitation by the insiders. Amoonguss and Carnivine need to learn that the outdoors don't have purple mushrooms floating at random through the air.

Next door to OutsideWorld, Girafarig does a little better running its own store, "I Girafarig I." Selling kayaks, radars, and levels (the kind you use in a wood shop), the place is both outdoorsy... and palindromic.

A uniformed Dodrio blazes by in front of you, pulling what looks like a golf cart; seconds later, an annoying customer is blasted directly through the cart's roof. Must be another tour guide. Just beside the scene, a superstitious Seaking is still trying for success; it leans over the balcony and chucks in coins. (EDITOR'S NOTE: Never do this in real life. You could hit somebody.)

A thin skywalk connects you to a balcony on the other side of the mall, where, in a store called "Renaissance Faire," the lore of the brave knights of old comes alive again. Here, Skarmory buys some more armour and practises its jousting moves, but when the racers invade, Xatu is quick to point out all its historical inaccuracies and attack those who aren't smart. Only the nerds can survive in this place, eh?

The floor is anchored by some kind of huge circus shop, on the walls of which you notice temporary tattoos reading "LM4" along with some mysterious symbols. In here, the unfunny Pokémon are given some serious ribbing. Without an ability to imitate others' actions or stand on one's head, it's clear you'll get nowhere. At the checkout, a Whiscash in a Southern accent informs you: "This place'll teach ya the meanin' of laugh!"

Gah. You'd better get off the floor quick, before the puns get any worse. Vote now!

Turns out the most annoying Pokémon on the tour was the tour guide itself, Dodrio. I guess the shoppers want their own free run at things. Meanwhile, despite being able to stand on its head, Hitmontop gets kicked out of is store for being unable to amuse enough people.

Wow, Skarmory looks like a cross between Magneton and Swellow. How come I never noticed that before?

THIRTY-SIXTH FLOOR
As you look around on the next floor, you're downhearted. You hadn't considered buying anything from this mall. Now, all of a sudden, you want to... but everything's way out of your price range. Under a sign reading "Exotic Imports" in handwritten letters, a Grumpig buys a rare statue from a Swanna, and you notice that it's paying in Nuggets.

In the high-end furniture store on your right, the devastation is cruel. Just as Cherrim finishes arranging a set of couches embroidered with what looks like gold leaf, a wave of Pokémon tear them to shreds, revealing blue, yellow and red feathers from Kanto's legendary birds. Well, maybe it's a good thing they got shredded. You probably wouldn't want to be Blizzarded, Thundered or Flamethrowered for no reason. But especially not by your couch.

A walk past a nearby "Deluxe Designers" store raises a philosophical question: Can a Purugly still have "ugly" in its name if it's wearing a Twist Mountain gold crown and shoes that cost several million Zenny? Each? Just down the hall, the question pops up again, as Granbull buys a tuxedo in a shop called "Rich Mon's World" [sic].

"La Boutique Chic" lies at the end of the hall. You're just watching a Maractus walk out with a rare Starf cake when the entire store implodes in an incredible burst of energy. You'd seen a couple of scattered moves being thrown during the race so far. But a Hyper Beam?! A furious Clefable steps out, demanding revenge on all the less-attractive thieves who raided its store. Some definitely less luxurious Pokémon stomp after it, demanding lower prices. Endless piles of evolutionary stones, TMs and undersea artifacts burst through the broken windows, along with more cash than you knew there was in the world.

Where the money of Pokémon is put to the test. Welcome to the Neo Mall.
