Are stripping down packages a big thing now in The Industry?

All 3 Major console makers are doing this. Example Xbox360 and Sony have budget consoles. Also, nintendo has the Stripped Twilight princess on GC which I belive is for those who don't want to spend a $150+ on a Wii. Is this a fad or a new staple of the industry?
