Are you hype for the Masters Tournament? (Yes/No)

I'm sort of in the middle, but leaning towards yes. No reserves is a definite bummer, and Iris and Alain likely being kicked in the first round is super disappointing. But Ash getting to battle Steven is a genuine surprise, which is incredibly rare in the modern anime.

I mean i find it ironic that people are suddenly desperate for reserves to be used, when in the past they'd complain about it.

Kanto and jouto got passes, the former being the first big tournament, and jouto Ash's team definitely not being up to par forcing reserves there.

But in the battle frontier and sinnoh it was a different case with people.

in the battle frontier, I remember how angry people got when Charizard showed up for Ash's first battle facility, and even angrier when it revealed to have Overheat, so many people claiming how it "Stole" the move from Torkoal, but then were cheering the praises of May's combusken when it used the attack in the kanto GF.

And of course the fact that Snorlax solo'ed the battle dojo with it's "infinite" health which was met with complaints...then Heracross came back and lost to a Venusaur which made people angry, Tauros I don't think anyone cared.

then came Ash's final battle pyramid battle, so many excited to see the BF team take down all 3 regi's...until it was revealed the kanto starters were coming in, that was retracted and people wanted Ash to lose feeling the kanto pokemon were "Stealing" glory they didn't deserve.

Now I move on to the sinnoh league, despite using his reserves there, we only saw a handful of them actually fight, and actually win.

Cyndaquil comes back, evolves and learns Eruption...yet all it gets for this is a draw?

Snorlax, Noctowl, Heracross and Sceptile were the only ones to get wins, everyone else was either beaten or never seen fighting, maybe there wasn't as much complaining as the BF, but it still wasn't a good situation.

But that's the problem, people are bound to complain if who they like doesn't get used, and what if the writers don't employ them right either as past history has shown?

Because in the end you lose either way.

Plus this time is different because not only are the opponents ash is facing are champions, much stronger than who he’s generally faced before, but also the entire premise of journeys is it’s a multi region gen full of references and appearances from past characters. This is pretty much the perfect opportunity to bring back old Pokémon, if they don’t here then it means the reserves will likely never fight again

That’s very much the opposite of what I saw back then, I remember largely positive reactions. With the dusclops example, I do remember some people praising the loss but not because of being mad that he was there, so much as they thought it was good to let it lose after beating a legendary to not seem “op” and to give the other kanto Pokémon more spotlight (something I specifically remember seeing a lot of people say, and for the record I disagreed with it). Certainly never saw anyone complain about the overheat part.

I’m sure some people disliked the reserves back then (just like some people now), but I’d say most people enjoyed them or at worst 50/50 (I certainly remember far more positive reactions than negatives). For example I know people liked seeing heracross back and I remember praise towards ash using it against darkrai+teaching it sleep talk as good development for ash being smart and strategizing. I specifically remember the praise for noctowl finally getting another win and learning some new moves. Heck, despite how controversial Tobias was sceptiles defeat of darkrai was overall complimented, sceptile is one of ash’s more popular Pokémon and usually considered one of his strongest and I think it’s safe to say this was a big part of the reason. So to say the majority disliked The reserves at the time just isn’t really true.

I did edit my original post to address that but the sinnoh league only had 8 reserves, 4 got a win and one draw means only 3 (donphan, swellow, and torkoal) failed to get any wins, which really isn’t that bad. It’s still unfortunate to see reserves come back just to lose, but the majority didn’t have that happen. Ideally they could easily right it to not have anyone go without any win, but I’ll give you that it doesn’t seem likely from the writers. Still, I’d argue, and I’d bet many others would agree, that it would be better to have something like sinnoh, where most get good returns but a couple reserves have lackluster ones, than no returns at all. Never getting to see the Oder Pokémon fight again in serious battles would be unfortunate, especially since some have a severe lack of wins currently

also, just wanted to elaborate since I wasn’t very specific my last post, the fact that ash is fighting some of the strongest trainers ever is why people want some of his strongest Pokémon to return as winning with this all new team of relatively inexperienced Pokémon may seem unfair and “cheap” to a lot of people. There’s a reason there’s always been so much talk about what ash’s “strongest” or “ultimate” team would be, people have long since wanted to see his heaviest hitters all together at once and the world tournament against the worlds strongest trainees is the most logical place for that.

They could've also just Ash stay with his Alola Team (as the Alola champion) and use it for PWT. Melmetal can G-max and if Ash needed the Lucario then ok-give him one as he would be missing 1 Pokemon. Make an Arc where Ash somehow travels to Hisui and his Dartrix at the time Evolves into H-Deciduye (with Dawn's Quilava becoming H-Typhlosion).

I don't see much difference between this and Ash getting a Powerhouse Team.

Make some Trainers challenge him for the Alola champion title, show introduction of the idea of Trial Captains, maybe let have a Trial Captain vs Galar Gyms Tournament becase why not, Milo vs Mallow, Nessa vs Lana and Kiawe vs Kabu all make sense.

Wish spoiler and leaker culture would die out though and the writers put more care into the matchups is all. I don't mind no reserves, I wish the Satoshi team got their current level of screen time and more buildup though. I just want interesting battles is all, the concept of a Champion League being a reality is cathartic considering the series lore.

Reminds me of the festival of champions manga.

Ash being confirmed to use his fanservice team of inexperienced OP gods and not his older Pokémon killed off all the hype. Not to mention the matchups are way too predictable.

This “world tournament” created to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary was a whole mess from the start. Not to mention Ash constantly facing Dragon, Electric and Fighting specialists due to the “mirror match rivalry” nature implemented since SM. It’s dumb writing, and I want it gone for SV.

That’s why I don’t care about Ash’s battles
But I do about Diantha’s and Iris’

Definitely not. Battles look terrible. Writing is going to be just as bad, if not worse. We know what's going to be the final match and where the production teams real priorities lie with Project Mediocre, and it's looking like it's going to be an exact repeat of the Kalos League. Final outcome and everything.

Definitely. Of course, I am very disappointed in some decisions, especially the handling of Alain or the matches not being entirely 6v6, but at the end of the day, the tournaments are always the best parts of any season, and Leon vs Ash definitely has the potential to be the new Nr. 1 fight, considering the whole series is leading up to it.

Project Mew? You mean the hunters that poach legendary Pokemon from their natural habitats, but for some reason are not considered hunters like the evil teams that try to do the exact same thing? Lol
I assume that after pwc is over then Peojext Mew will happen again.

Okay let's make some points here:

Positive

+ Seeing Ash battle some Champions is really interesting, I like that he is fighting Steven for example
+ Battle wise all matches seem interesting
+ We are getting what it was promissed to us, a big champion tournament.
+ Good animation

But now come the negatives

- Why no reserves? This could have been done easily if Ash used his former Pokemon in all the previous battles but he did not want for reasons that are still not mentioned. Or making every battle 6 vs 6. But I think we neded more 2 on 1 stupid filler episodes, and yes, despite beeing a Rocket fan, I would have cut the Cassidy and Butch episode cause as of this moment it's pointless.

- This is going to be rushed as hell. All first rounds will be 1 episode ,I suppose Cynthia is going to be 2 episodes and Lion vs Lance/Diantha 1 episode and Lion 3 episdes, this makes 10-11 episodes. By September this should be wrapped up.

- We really lost a lot of time with a lot of stupid things

- Why this is not the endgame? And what is going to be and endgame cause anything they throw at us is going to be super random cause the lack of buildup.

Miscellanous

- Okay this is the final tournament ¿ What is next?, did we even close Goh arc or even Koharu, I guess the last 3-4 episodes will solve that riddle, cause anime wise we don't know what we will encounter next gen.

- If this is Ash end (I doubt it but still) ... it's really stupid... Sorry but some reserves should have made their presence.

Nah not really, most of the hype already died for me. On paper this should be the hypest thing ever, but the execution seems to be pointing the other way around. To be more specific:

• Reserves. In a world tournament fighting against the best of the best, this is just dumb and unforgivable. Like that’s the basics of any world tournament arc, and all star gatherings of people’s favorite characters
• The matchup. It’s dumb and hold no extra narrative weight, when they could’ve gotten people to feel more invested in the matchup
• Pacing. The fact that leon vs alain is already going to be rushed in what time is leftover in the next episode. With this many high profile characters they should milk them for the unique interactions between them. The opening and the champions mingling together should be one ep. This is one tournament they could afford to take their time with. It would be one thing if these characters had already appear in the series and had some meaningful story buildup, but half of them feel like they’re just there and rely solely on past series knowledge. Which again just shows how BS it is when people say the show is aimed at kids and newcomers.
• The timing. This should’ve been the climax of the series. You can’t get higher than this, but you still have goh’s actual expedition in the back of people’s mind. Which honestly just hurts both things.

I am personally very hyped for this. Yes the writers could have done a better job but overall after all these years we are seeing Ash face off against these established champions, we waited decades for this. I just hope they do Ash justice in this tournament and not do the "Ash gets pummelled and then pulls out a victory at the last second" type of scenarios that are overused and very boring at this point. Ash is a champion, he is more than capable of going toe to toe with the master's 8. Other than that, I hope for well designed battles and animations. I get the feeling that Ash will defeat Leon.

No I’m not hyped up at all. I only say that because when the PWC just started, it seemed like such an exciting thing but then slowly it went downhill and then it just became a rushed mess. The next thing is, like somebody previously said, there’s no stakes. We already predict how majority of the battles will turn out. All I’m saying right now is that if Iris beats Cynthia then I’m seriously done lol. Cynthia and Ash need to have a battle once and for all.
