It would be good to know, i remember on the commentary for the 3rd pokemon movie they said that information on ash's dad was going to be revealed in the 5th series ... well i don't think i heard anything about it. He is still alive we know that, but has there been anything about him within the last 2-3 series?

Seriously, I think I read somewhere about how in one episode of the Pokemon cartoons that Ash's mom told Ash that his dad heard about Ash's adventures and was proud of him.
Now if for some dumb reason Ash dad was Giovanni, I bet there would be a flashback that would go something like this.
*Giovanni and Samuel Oak battle furiously, but Oak wins*
Oak: You were the chosen one! You were suppose to destroy the Sith..uh...I mean, Team Rocket, not join them! You were suppose to bring balance to Pokemon, not lead it into darkness!
