I have no idea if there had been a thread for this at some point before, so sorry if there has.

But I have been watching episodes of pokemon, and recently seen the episodes based around Ashs Primeape, and have wondered, what was the point in Ash being giving it. I see how it was good to give him a disobedient fighting type and have Ash deal with it, but he had it for like 5 episodes? Was there really any point to it? Or have I missed something?

CyberCubed

Yeah, ok!
Back in Kanto the writers didn't know how to handle Ash's Pokemon. That's why he released so many pokemon and others were sent to Oak's lab immediately like Krabby and Muk.

The writers basically handled Ash's team poorly back then aside from Bulbasaur/Squirtle/Charizard.

Maybe he gave Primeape because the Pokémon would be better trained by a Fighting type specialist.
What is a shame, since Primeape was a really amusing Pokémon to watch. They could have made a running gag with it always punching Jessie in the face.

I suppose it was preferable to observing the fighting tournament from a spectators point of view, i liked the development it got Ash even if it was a bit rushed and uneccessary, also would of liked to see it affect him with Charmeleon/Charizard a little more.

Yeah i can totally agree with that, but why give it away so soon? I mean like Ash could have say taken it through the league and then maybe given it away, at least it would of been of better use.

He can't keep all of his pokemon for ever and like people have said, It was very early days for pokemon so the writers hadn't really discovered what works well yet...

Like some said, the writers didn't know how to handle the series back in the day. You are watching the original series again and I am sure that this isn't the only "weird" thing you noticed. They could have made the P1 Grand Prix episode after the league with a most experienced Primeape (And perhaps with Brock's Geodude evolved into a Graveller?), but unfortunately it didn't happen. And the worst part is that we will probably never see Primeape again.

Yeah and i do think that it would have been given away at some point eventually, however i just feel that 5 episodes seemed like a waste, but i guess the writers were trying out different ideas, just seemed a bit pointless with such a small time with Ash

I think it was loosely hinted that Ash may see Primeape again when he released it, but no i agree i think that we won't, they had the whole of the battle Frontier to bring it back and they didn't. I also can't believe Ash never went back for Pidgeot at all during the series.

The only way I see the talk about Ash's old Pokemon ending is that either he goes back for them or he finds out that they are no longer living.

I never understood why the writers even let him catch Primeape in the first place. Butterfree doesn't matter because it probably has children to help raise and as far as Pigeot goes, I really don't want to see it ever again. This is why I never enjoyed Kanto. Releases is the worse kind of troll on this show. Glad that it doesn't happen anymore.

Well... the writers simply wanted Ash to catch more Pokémon, so they had to get empty spots on his team. That's why he released his Pokémon back in that time, they didn't know how to handle this very well.

In the dub, they said something about ash coming back someday to take Primeape, but unfortunately there is no such hint in the original Japanese version (That is why I hate the dub).

And Pidgeot, well... I think he released it, so it isn't his Pokémon anymore.
We may see Charizard (sadly :/), Squirtle and Gliscor again, but Pidgeot, Lapras and Primeape... I don't think so.

Yeah that's what i mean, the writers obviously planned to have Primeape go pretty quickly anyway, i just don't see the point in giving it to him in the first place if it wasn't going to stay for longer.

But Ash also sent some back to Oaks, and the ones he did keep on hand he released pretty soon after, that 6th slot had Butterfree, then it went and Ash got Haunter, if you can count it, and he let it go too, then he got Primeape, and let it go too, and pretty much from then on, without the league, that slot just stayed open, none of those pokemon after Butterfree stayed for very long.

Ah right i wasn't aware it wasn't in the Japanese version. Yeah i agree that Primeape and Lapras have gone, even though Lapras lived up to what it needed to be by helping Ash through the Orange Islands, it was vital to him during that part of the series. As for Pidgeot, Ash also promised to come back for it but didn't which is also pretty surprising i think.

And as for the older pokemon appearing, I'm actually happy to see them return, including the 3 you mentioned, as long as they don't get rrammed down our throats, then i think it would be great to see them.

I will be glad to see them again in future episodes, since a lot of Ash's Pokémon appeared at the end of DP saga. Maybe this time Squirtle and some other will show up;

I want to see Bayleef again too. And I can't stand Charizard, but he have a lot of fans and I guess they deserve to see their beloved lizard again.

Yeah I would like to see Charizard (unfortunately I am one of those fans), Squirtle and Gliscor return, as well as his older pokemon, but actually I think 2 pokemon deserve an appearance more than ever, Kingler and Tauros, who have not appeared since mid Battle Frontier.

But yeah, I do hope this Primeape scenario doesn't happen again, I just felt it was a pointless capture and disappointing to see it go so soon.

Honestly i could care less about Tauros i mean Ash caught 28 of them which was just a joke from the start i kind of like that now and then the odd one gets called but they should leave it at that, Charizard and Kingler are a different story however.

Eh, it's a contraversal event in the forums of the Pokemon anime.

Personally, I call it all for development on Ash's journey and our viewership.

Others can argue back, but i still keep my opinion.

Again this thread? anyway, I really did find it to be a wasted opportunity. If they were going to give it away 2 episodes later, like why bother gosh.

I don't think Pidgeot was ever officially released. Rather, Ash let it stay in Pallet Town so it could protect the people and Pokemon from the Spearow flocks.
