I was watching the kanto series on cartoon network this morning and prof oak mentioned Ash's other rivals (We all know Gary and his current status off following in the family business), ive never actually thought about it but did we ever meet the other rivals? and what happened to them? im sure something was mentioned at indego plateu but i cant remember what was said. Any of you guys remember?

CyberCubed

Yeah, ok!
He never saw them. Their starters were Charmander and Bulbasaur, but they were failures as trainers so they gave up.

If you mean the two other trainers that began at Pallet town, Oak said they quit in the Primape episode. We never met them, and we will never know who they are.

I also remember in the Samurai episode that he said two trainers and Gary easily beat him, and it showed a Bulbasaur and Charmander attacking his Pokemon.

hmmm... failures? they must have done okay to have gotten 5 badges whilst ash only had 4(The Sabrina episode)... Its funny that they were written completely out of the series because at the begining of the kanto series we were lead to believe they were all strong trainers The battle with the samuri guy and the fact they beat misty's 3 sisters.

I think it would have given the story line a little more depth in kanto if we got to meet them.

Yeah, ok!
Actually I think people are making a bigger deal out of those trainers than they really should.

The point of those two trainers were to show how tough Pokemon training and getting Gym badges really is. The Oaks ranch episode had Oak saying that Ash and Gary were the best, and the two other trainers failed.

Introducing these two failures would have been pointless and wouldn't have had any more depth to the storyline. Not everything needs to be spoon fed to us, it was fine how they did it.

Ash doesn't really have any rivals right now(in America atleast, I don't know about Japan). Unless you count Tyson and Morrison, but I don't think they have appeared since the Hoenn League, just like Harrison in Johto.Whereas May has rivals in Drew and Harley in I think every Contest.

I personally wouldn've liked if they revealed who the other two trainers are. Seeing how Ash lacks a current rival, they could've added them for most of the Pokemon season.

Ash would be better with a rival, maybe that way he could battle more often, and not lose at every single regional league.

would you not still regard Richie as a rival? as for the other 2 rivals not adding depth, yes they would. It would have been good to see different pokemon, different trainers and perhaps a trainer wanting to catch ash the way ash was with gary back in the day. Just knowing others who started out with ash were out there would have added depth to the story. Being introduced to them whilst they were having problems and such would have gave the story a little bit more reality instead of them dropping out after they had already earned at least 5 badges.

Also more of a story could have been made off Ash overtaking them as he improves as we know they were regarded as better trainers right up until ash's battle with Sabrina.

They are not going to introduce characters back from the first season that were only mentioned in passing three times out of 83 episodes. While Ash does need a rival as his training skills seeming to be lacking, he doesn't seem to need a rival. For some odd reason.

As for the identity of the two rivals, make of it what you will. One could be Damien, but it doesn't seem logical, as the Charmander was shown to win against Pinsir, and Damien said Charmander never won. Unless he was over-generalizing.

But you don't have to listen.

Ash's other two rivals haven't been seen. But I don't think if would be a good idea to make them be Ash's rivals.

Don't you think one rival is enough? I mean, Gary was the Kanto rival. Johto, I think a little bit Gary, and Hoenn was kind of Morisson. Ash having three rivals at the same time wouldn't be the greatest idea.

to be honest, the REAL point of those two trainers were for a convienient plot device so that Ash would not get any of the three standard starters and receive pikachu, the franchise's mascot.

they were convienently "failed" because the writers didn't want to reference them anymore since they're completely useless to the storyline.

Gary's starter wasn't revealed until the Jotho leauge, so for the longest time, what Gary's starter was was a complete mystery. In fact, for the longest time, I thought that he didn't take the standard starter and started with Eevee. (which evolved to Umbreon later...)
