Ash's strongest rival

Paul's the strongest, no questions asked. He put his Pokemon through intense training and actually worked to get where he was at, unlike that cheat Alain who wouldn't be able to win without Mega Evolution. Paul doesn't need Mega Evolution to be a bad ass.
So by your logic are Diantha and Malva just wimps who would never win without Mega Evolution too?

Yeah most of Paul's pokemon are powerhouses/tanks with status moves/abilities.If Alain doesn't have the keystone for Charizard then the power for his team drops by a lot.
------------------------------------------------------------
  • Magmortar
  • Drapion
  • Electivire
  • Honchkrow
  • Ursaring
  • Torterra
Would be more than enough to qualify as being Ash's strongest rival with the most balanced team ever assembled out of all of Ash's rival's teams.

Since the Keystone/Mega Stone was a huge part of Alain as a trainer, a big part of Alain's overall resume as a trainer, he and Charizard worked really hard to attain the strength level they managed to achieve in ME-4 with Mega Evolution, which helped them being the first non-E4/Champion trainer to defeat an E4 member on screen.....the Keystone was a big part of Alain as a trainer, so you can't just say 'take his Keystone' away for no reason.

And bother to explain how Alain defeats Paul even without Mega Evolution? I still don't see it happening TBH.

I think Alain could beat at least several members of Paul's team, even without Mega Evolution

His Charizard's stamina is absolutely insane, because while he was allowed to heal between the ten consecutive Mega Evolution battles, he wasn't allowed to rest

Also, it took out an Elite Four-level Houdoom who had Flash Fire for its ability with a Blast Burn, so even if Alain isn't skilled, (he is, like it or not) he can certainly win a battle of attrition

Considering how absurdly broken Alain's MCX was, could defeat Ash-Greninja multiple times, came out unbeaten in the Kalos League, defeated 10 Megas in a row without even a full heal, including one belonging to an E4 member, Base Charizard would take out a huge part of Paul's team as well.

The only Pokémon of Paul I see putting up a pretty good fight against Base Charizard is his Electivire, others would get pretty decisively beaten in a 1 vs 1.

Oh yeah and if “METHUD” get used:

Torterra vs Tyranitar -> Torterra (recalled)
Magmortar vs Weavile -> Draw
(Guts) Ursaring vs Bisharp -> Draw
Honchkrow vs Unfezzant -> Draw
Torterra vs Metagross -> Metagross
Electivire vs Metagross -> Electivire
Electivire vs Charizard -> Charizard
Drapion vs Charizard -> Charizard

Alain wins 6-5 by a more comfortable margin. Note that “Draw” can also mean whoever wins gets easily RKed. For example due to type advantage I can see Magmortar having a slightly higher chance of beating Weavile though even then it would easily get RKed by Bisharp especially with T-Wave + Guillotine. Oh and finally if Alain opens up with Charizard:

Charizard vs Torterra -> Charizard
Charizard vs Electivire -> Draw
Metagross vs Honchkrow -> Metagross (no damage)
Metagross vs Magmortar -> Metagross (no damage)
Matagross vs Ursaring -> Metagross
Metagross vs Drapion -> Metagross

If T.U.F.E.N.D was used, then there’s a possibility (but definitely not a guarantee) that Metagross could loose and then Alain would be forced to send Bisharp out, but that’s as far as Paul goes if Alain goes from strongest to weakest.
