Auto lock

There is all this hassle about B.U.M.Ping 30 day old threads, well why not have an auto lock that after a certain amount of time it gets locked. I know there is the delete program but making that the 30 day old change will cause the usefulness of the search engine to go down.

I don't think there's a hack available for this.

It sounds like a good idea... prevents bumpers and all... but, I dont think there is a program like that... maybe Joe can find it... i dont know

That might cause those topic-makers to frantically bump their topics though, I've seen that, and if this goes into effect it'll naturally get worse.

The simple action of checking time of posting of the previous post combined with simple mathematical analysis ("ok, this was posted in June. It's now December. Is that more than 30 days? ... ... ... Well yes it is. Then I'll not post.") is enough. The problem is that there are 8300+ users who post or have posted here and there are many who are frustrating for all members because of their ignorance. If they just scan through the general rules once, if they try posting an illegal thread or bumping, at least they will have a red light going off somewhere in their head "WAIT. I think there's not something right with this...". You can't control such a vast community. That's why we need the humans here that go by the name of Mods. Not automated hacks. In my opinion, there's not much junk here because the Mods deal with it more or less well. And when a bump happens here and there, they close the thread and that's one more that won't be bumped again. The "lock down threads after 30 days of inactivity" hack, if one exists (haven't seen it mentioned at vBulletin's site) can't think for itself, and it sounds rubbish because threads can die and be "reincarnated" after 29 days and sometimes this happens just to post "Yeah, *insert name of poster who answered the question* is right!". Catch my drift? Oh, and I read somewhere that Serebii doesn't like hacks anyway.

And I agree with Carpetted!. Users who run shops in Fan Art or fic writers are going to start bumping their own threads to evade the set date of closure, only resulting in MORE spam and bumping (and I hope you don't want that).

Also, don't we make an exception for an author bumping fanfics? This will prevent somone from updating after too long, won't it.

Sorry, I could very well be wrong.

Wow, I mean, wow... A comic genius you are, I concede that much.

Anywhoo.

I think the hack might have some real merit. Joe's obviously got the final word, but I'd give it a thumbs up. For that's worth, at least.

I don't see why bumping an old thread is bad...to me it's better to bump an old thread instead of making the same topic 10 times over.

whoever gets that installed needs to become an instant admin or someone who can update like ninetails2000.
that'd be bad... just because you can install a hack or consider someone to install it doesn't mean you'd be a good admin =P

As for the hack... meh, it probably won't be considered.
But it's a good idea in theory. ^^ And the second hack sounds really nice~
