AVI/Youtube help needed

I recorded an AVI that I was planning to put on Youtube, and it was automatically saved as a Windows Media Player 10 file (which I don't even use). Anyways, when I went to upload it to Youtube, it came in at 429 MB (the limit is 100 MB). And the entire recording is only a little over 3 minutes long

Any tips on making it small enough to fit on Youtube?

That or "apply a codec" like DivX 6.0 or XviD MPEG-4 to reduce the size.

Full framed, uncompressed AVI's take up *gasp*-ingly large ammounts of space.

The divx converter compressed it to only 6.5 MB, well within acceptable parameters. However, the video turned out horrible. Any suggestions on how to improve it?

I would suggest trying another codec. They don't all give the same results.
