Battle of [insert original title here] (WARSTORY)

J.T.

ಠ_ಠ
H'okay, this is my first warstory. I've seen a few, so I think I know how this should go...

I didn't plan this battle, it was a random matchup with someone on the Smogon Shoddy server. I asked for my opponent's permission before getting this saved and posted. I am Psychic J.T. on Smogon, and my actions will be in blue (the readable shade for once). My opponent, andrewn630, will be dark red. My comments will be in pale green. All speech from within the match has been removed, as it was mostly either pointless banter about nicknames or comments that I will make in this post anyway.

You may notice that when Pokemon are sent in, there are nicknames, but these nicknames don't appear anywhere else in the warstory. This is because I edited out the nicknames to avoid confusion. This took me an additional half-hour or so before I remembered Microsoft Word has a Replace tool. You're welcome.

Psychic J.T. sent out Ember (lvl 100 Infernape ?).
andrewn630 sent out Everglade (lvl 100 Swampert ?).

VS.
260.png

100% -- 100%

The battle begins as both of us set our leads on each other. Honestly, I've had better opening match-ups. Infernape doesn't have much he can do to take out this Swampert - I don't use Grass Knot on my LeadApe. My only option is to use Stealth Rock and start working from there. First, though, I may as well use Fake Out.

Infernape used Fake Out.
Swampert lost 7% of its health.
Swampert flinched!

Swampert restored 6% of its health.

392.png
VS.
260.png

100% -- 99%

Kinda pointless, yes, but I was hoping for a critical hit. At least then when I switched in something else, I had a slightly higher chance of taking Swampert out.

Infernape used Stealth Rock.

Swampert restored 1% of its health.

392.png
VS.
260.png

1% ----- 100%

I got Stealth Rock up. Infernape's purpose is fulfilled. Now to find a way to kill or at least weaken this Swampert. Neither Close Combat nor Fire Blast will do much damage, but the standard Swampert has lower Special Defense, and Infernape has higher Special Attack. Also, Blaze will kick in and power up Fire Blast, and it has a chance of burning Swampert, hopefully making my next switch-in a little safer. With that in mind, I decide to go with Fire Blast.

Infernape used Fire Blast.
It's not very effective...
Swampert lost 36% of its health.

Huh. I was expecting him to finish me then and there, but I guess he knew I couldn't do much to him. At least I have one more chance to burn him. Or, if I'm lucky, get a crit and kill him.

Infernape goes down. I didn't get the burn I was hoping for, but at least this guy's weakened enough that whatever I switch in next can take him down.

Pointed stones dug into Empoleon.
Empoleon lost 6% of its health.

Out comes Empoleon. I don't have any other Grass move users on my team, so it boils down to one more attempt to get this guy out of the way. I want to keep Empoleon alive so he can attempt a sweep later on, though, so I'll have to be careful.

Empoleon used Grass Knot.

There we go. Now to see what else he has...

andrewn630 switched in Wallop (lvl 100 Heracross ?).
Pointed stones dug into Heracross.
Heracross lost 12% of its health.

395.png
VS.
214.png

93% ---- 87%

Crap. I'll have to take a turn to switch out. I really don't want to show this next Pokemon to him now, because if I do he can prepare for it. I want to keep its surprise value and only bring it out at the end, when his status users and hard-hitting sweepers are down for the count. However, things don't seem to look like they'll let that happen, so it's time to bring in Cresselia.

Psychic J.T. switched in Cresselia (lvl 100 Cresselia ?).
Pointed stones dug into Cresselia.
Cresselia lost 12% of its health.
Heracross used Close Combat.
It's not very effective...

VS.
214.png

79% ---- 87%

I guessed correctly and Cress ate the Close Combat. I fully expect this Heracross to be either Scarfed or Banded - in any case, it can't do much except spam an ineffective defense-killing move. I figure the best move to make is to set up a Reflect for whatever switches in next, because there's no way this Heracross is staying in.

Great, now this is exactly what I didn't want to happen. Luckily, my Reflect should give me enough room to switch out to something else and eat Tyranitar's Crunch. I hesitate here, though, because he might expect that and use Fire Punch to hit any incoming Steel-types. I decide to risk it anyway.

Psychic J.T. switched in Artemis (lvl 100 Scizor ?).

I was right in switching in Scizor. What's more, now I know he's not holding a Babiri Berry, because of the Life Orb damage Tyranitar took from hitting me. A quick Bullet Punch should fix this threat, although he's likely going to switch out.

4-3 for Psychic J.T.

I hate situations like this. I have no idea what my opponent will pull out next, so I can't intelligently make a good counter-switch. It drives me nuts to rely on guessing. The way I see it, I have three choices to switch in - Swampert to avoid super-effective threats, Cresselia for pure defense, or Jolteon to outspeed and kill whatever andrew sent in.

Psychic J.T. switched in Volt (lvl 100 Jolteon ?).
andrewn630 switched in Wallop (lvl 100 Heracross ?).

Pointed stones dug into Jolteon.
Jolteon lost 12% of its health.

135.png
VS.
214.png

87% ---- 75%

I ultimately chose to go with Jolteon and pretty much immediately regret it. This Heracross is either Banded or Scarfed; if it's Scarfed it'll outspeed and kill Jolteon, and if it's Banded I can kill it first. I don't care to stick around and find out. Worried that he'll expect me to switch to Cresselia and use Megahorn, but not wanting to switch to Empoleon and eat a badly-predicted Close Combat, I switch to something that's neutral to both.

Psychic J.T. switched in Tsunami (lvl 100 Swampert ?).

39% ---- 69%

Oof. That did a bit more than I was expecting. At least now I know what to switch in next. Once again, though, I seem to have a deadweight sitting around with a low amount of HP. Another stupid move on my part.

Psychic J.T. switched in Cresselia (lvl 100 Cresselia ?).
Pointed stones dug into Cresselia.
Cresselia lost 12% of its health.

488.png

At this point I realize Cresselia might not be such a deadweight after all. I know she can survive another Close Combat, but she's dying quickly, and she can't recover much anymore either. I plan on setting up a Reflect and doing whatever I can to what comes in next. If for some reason this Heracross stays in, I can finally finish it off.

I still can't believe I didn't expect something like that. After setting up a Reflect and taking so little damage from his physical attacks, he was bound to stop and think "hey, maybe I should try special attackers on this thing..." But even if I did expect that, what could I do about it? Answer: Not much. Empoleon runs Grass Knot over Ice Beam, Swampert is too low on health to survive an Avalanche, and switching to Jolteon would probably end in death on the switch. Cresselia's got to stay in and take this one head-on. apply directly to the forehead

I used Moonlight hoping to survive whatever attack this thing used next, but I only ended up giving Latias a turn to set up. Now there seems to be no way to take it out with anything but Swampert, which is incredibly risky considering his low health. All I can do now is hit with Ice Beam and hope for the best - "the best" in this case being a critical hit, which, by the way, I hate relying on.

Toning down my asshat level for a bit, I begin to get worried here. I wasn't able to do the math at the time, so I wasn't sure whether or not Empoleon would outspeed a Scarfed Heracross. Doing the calculation now, I realize I had about a 20-point speed advantage over an Adamant ScarfCross, but I don't know that at this point. For all I know, it could be a Jolly ScarfCross, and if that's the case I'm really screwed. At the same time, though, I can't run anymore. I have only one switch-in left, and I'm not going to let my beast of a late-game sweeper go to waste.
Also, this Heracross is pissing me off, so it's gotta die.

... Remind me never to tempt fate again. When I first started building this team, one of the glaring problems raters saw with it was a major Gyarados weakness. I didn't think much of it until it started getting totally killed by every team with a Gyarados, which seemed to be about one in three teams. It was at that point that I decided to add my Cresselia, specifically with Charge Beam and Reflect to take down Gyarados. Later I would add on Jolteon, who can outspeed a DDed Adamant Gyarados and survive an unboosted Waterfall on the switch. Those two would remain my only real counters to Gyarados. Notice something about that? Right, they're both dead. Horrifying memories of my team getting massacred by Gyarados returned right about now, so I crossed my fingers as I clicked the attack button.

You're kidding me.

I'm not sure why he used Ice Fang again - maybe he figured I was going to die anyway, maybe he misclicked, maybe he just felt like being a jackass and killing me with his weakest move, but for whatever reason I somehow won because of it. Looking back on the match, I realize Swampert managed to win the match by literally doing nothing, which is not his style - he wins a lot of matches for me, but typically he does it by wrecking things, rather than standing still and letting things wreck him. In any case, many "gg's" were thrown around (some before the game actually ended) before I asked him if I could make this into a warstory.

SLOPS:
- Me for screwing up a couple times and getting too cocky
- Swampert for not doing anything
- Cresselia for getting neutered by a bit of sand in her eye

PROPS:
- Andrewn for being a good opponent
- Empoleon for killing a third of the other team late-game
- Scizor for killing another third
- Swampert for not doing anything but winning anyway

Again, this is my first warstory, so I dunno how good it is. :|

Wow...that was really close. It's amazing that you have 1% of your health left and you still managed to beat the guy. Sandstorm really plays a factor. I want to point out that after Latias fainted, you didn't change the picture to Heracross so it kinda looked like you fought Latias twice.

Wow, dude, I can't believe you won that. Soo damn lucky, seriously.
If your opponent would have done waterfall for the last turn, he would have died from SS and It would have been a tie, though, right? I think it doesn't work like that on shoddy but it does in wifi.

Your opponent's team and battling skills made this warstory less fun to read than I felt it should have been. However, the comments were nice, and keep working on writing warstories. ^_^
