Reds team is based on the event Pokemon in Pokemon yellow. They replaced his espeon to make his team look like its stright from yellow.

Edit: Looked it up on Bulbapedia. Turns out there is diamond dust with no in battle effect on certain special days. Otherwise it's hail.

Well then, apparently I've only battled him (just the once) when it was not a Hailstorn. Figured it was always DD. Oh well.

when i boy Soul silver, i was looking forward that battle. The best of beating ash, is that later you can get a Kanto and Hoenn starter.
