BDSP: Worst Pokemon game?

Bolt the Cat

Bringing the Thunder
Nope, LGPE gets that dishonor. LGPE is equally samey as BDSP but Yellow is FAR more outdated than DP, so its sameyness stands out much worse than BDSP. DP is still mostly good, it just has an outdated artstyle and a horribly balanced regional dex (that they largely fixed in Platinum but then refused to bring back). RBY has an outdated everything, there's not one gameplay aspect I can point to and say that it hasn't been done far better in a more modern game. To put it simply, a glorified remaster of a 2006 handheld game doesn't quite look as regressive as a glorified remaster of a 1996 handheld game.

Also, the one major thing LGPE does differently, replacing the traditional capture mechanics with Go capture mechanics, is even more regressive and really clunky. So not only does it regress to being a glorified remaster of a 1996 handheld game, but something even worse than that, lower than anything the series has ever seen.

Not the worst, but they could've done better. Like maybe a post-game story with Giratina or being able to bring regional variants of available Pokemon over.

fire red and leaf green were worse. strictly keeping all pokemon introduced after gen 1 locked in the post game was awful. the sevi islands are overrated in my opinion, extra content is appreciated but the constant need for HMs was a turn off.

the return of strictly random encounters was a huge turn off for me in BDSP. some people say that combining random encounters and introducing the grand underworld was "the best of both worlds", i disagree completely. i believe sword and shield had the true best of both worlds when it came to random encounters and pre-existing.

FRLG having HMs is strictly a product of its time. SM was the clear delineator for HMs, every game before it had HMs and every game after it did not have HMs (usually having Ride Pokemon of some kind). If FRLG was made after SM, it would not have HMs and then what would be the issue with the Sevii Islands?

I honestly don't know how you can say FRLG is worse than LGPE though. FRLG may have locked Pokemon outside of Gen 1 until the post game, but LGPE locked Pokemon outside of Gen 1 from the entire game. And even if you think the Sevii Islands are overrated, are they really any worse than LGPE not having any additional post game areas (besides Cerulean Cave that existed in the originals) or pretty much any post game content aside from Master Trainers?

I could see FRLG being worse than BDSP, but not worst overall. I can think of multiple games worse than FRLG.

LGPE were the worst because they stripped away everything that made the series great and tried to be a much worse console version of Go. Gameplay is extremely boring after you catch Mewtwo, the Master trainers were just horrible as the post game as you could only use one specific Pokémon at a certain level in a battle with Ditto being the exception but even if you had a high enough Pokémon, the AI still finds a way to be extremely cheap (who the heck keeps a Pidgey completely unevolved to get it at a high level?), and the co op was extremely broken when facing Gym Leaders and the E4. I got bored with these games about three months after release and I traded them in at GameStop which I regret only a tiny bit because I forgot to take the Pokéball Controller Mew out of my party and into a Box to transfer it into Home and SwSh/BDSP and I really don’t want to buy another copy just to get it. The rest of the Pokémon I don’t care about as I got my Shiny Melmetal from Go in my main Sw game and nothing of great value other than Mew is left in the save for Eevee.

After that I’d say RBG are the second worst only because they don’t hold up very well these days as FRLG made Kanto much better in so many ways and the Gen I games are full of so many bugs and glitches that it is really easy to ruin a game file by mistake.

You are right, i really did dislike playing with a joy con, it's the main reason why i have not been able to bring myself to finish another playthrough of let's go pikachu. i guess if i really think about it, i do have to agree that fire red was more fun to play despite the additional features (and in spite of removed features) in let's go. i forgot how frustrating my experience with let's go was and instead was only remembering the graphics rather than the gameplay. hehe, i really don't know if i can finish that game a second time unless i was playing with someone.

not sure how to reply to 2 people in one post.

in BDSP you can get a free Mew and transfer it to sword and shield if you still have save data for let's go. did you delete the data already?

i would rank the gens (not including remakes)
sun/moon (loved the story and the removal of HMs)
black/white (loved the story and appreciated that the evil team wasn't stopped until AFTER the pokemon league. i always feel like the 8th gym battle in games is somewhat anticlimactic due to usually having caught a legendary before facing them)
x and y (i loved the addition of mega evolutions and the transition to 3D in the main series. though of course the graphics weren't perfect, but i really enjoyed the new pokemon and i actually enjoyed having multiple rival characters even though their teams were lackluster)
sword/shied (mostly for the wild area, i disliked how all of the cities and towns were filled with scenery only, so few accessible locations)
emerald (i loved battling against 2 teams and seeing the box art legendaries fight each other in game, i wish there was some kind of extra reward for the battle frontier though)
platinum (a great game and i was glad they finally did a special and physical split, i wanted that since gen 2 when hitmonchan couldn't take advantage of the elemental punches well)
crystal (it's age shows but still a great game, would definitely rank the remakes higher)
red/blue/yellow (i like some of the teams in red/blue better than yellow such as Koga, Erika, Lt Surge, and Sabrina. they got nerfed badly in yellow)

Generation 4 was how I got into Pokémon
Okay I am going to be brutally honest about BSDP as someone who has played the original version and Platinum. To be honest I am pretty disappointed. I don't understand why they would leave out so many things from what made Pokemon Platinum so great and just go with what the original DP was. That is NOT how you do a remake.

Look at the others like FireRed/LeafGreen that are like the originals but they introduced Sevii Islands which felt like a new place to explore.

HeartGold/SoulSilver redesigned a lot of places that is better than original and added new areas to explore.

Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby while it still got flack for not including the Battle Frontier it at least had a cool feature where you can fly with Latio or Latias wherever you want to go in the region.

Brilliant Diamond and Shiny Pearl doesn't even do much compared to all of them. The ONLY new changes they did was that you no longer have to teach HM moves to your Pokemon you just have a new Poketch app that lets you do the move with a help of a random wild Pokemon which is an improvement I will admit is really cool, but thats pretty much it.

While I still had fun with BDSP I wasn't all that impressed since Platinum I find to be the BETTER one. Also that art style they went with for the characters just looks so goofy and weird. After finishing it I was just left with this feeling of "Well this felt underwhelming at best" so yeah as someone who is a Gen 4 fan I am not too keen on this remake. Platinum still is my favorite but this just falls behind.

"I think its pretty bad."

Why didn't you like them?

I was disappointed in the original base game. With a lack of mini games. Not everyone likes to battle all the time/competitively battle.

When it comes to what I think is the worst Pokémon game I have to first assign it a few categories. First is if it’s a spin-off or core series game and second is if it is an original game, sequel or remake. For the sake of this comment I would like to focus on core series games.

Now, is BDSP the worst game? No. If we are talking solely on remakes then the answer would still be “no”. The game that holds the distinction of the worst remake—in my opinion, at least—is LGPE. A remake of Pokémon Yellow sounds like something everyone with “nostalgia fever” would be clamoring for. However, that was until we found out that the game regressed into using Pokémon Go inspired catching mechanics, removed the option of battling wild Pokémon, along with no postgame material (I’m sorry but Master Trainers is an awful idea) and no new material to the story leaves a lot to be desired. The graphics look decent but it’s painfully obvious that the developers left the maps in a grid just like their source material from nearly 25 years ago. It has countless issues and remains the only core series game I have not completed at least twice.

The second category would be original core series games and the worst of these would be XY. I have stated a few times in the past that these games lack a cohesive story which, at times, is incredibly hard to grasp and really makes me want to just put the game down. I played once through each entry and the second time through Kalos was an absolute chore. And it really is the poor story that drains these entries down for me. I would go into more detail but you can read me rip into these games over in the Generation VI section.

Now onto BDSP… are these games the greatest thing to happen to Pokémon? No. But they aren’t all that bad. Yes, the basically just remastered the game and sent it out and we should be upset that this is what they did. The remakes before these (FRLG, HGSS, ORAS) all added new original content to make the games feel fresh. ORAS expanded on the lore of the newly introduced mega evolution mechanic. Regional Pokédex were updated in HGSS, ORAS and LGPE to accommodate newly introduced Pokémon while BDSP stuck with the original 493 meaning Sylveon got locked out of the game while regional forms of what is in the Pokédex are completely ignored. But the game did stay true to a great story that Sinnoh had and for that I am happy they stayed true to that. The game is what it is: it took zero steps forward in a remake perspective but at least it didn’t take any steps backwards either.

But even for me as a Gen 4 stan, they are down there amongst the worst games ever.

BDSP only flaws are the chibi style, no imports of any pokemon after Gen 4 (through HOME compatibility) and the excessive difficulty spike after the E4.
I prefer my games more on the easy side. I haven't replayed the story, only occasionally returning to it to continue fill the national pokedex.

A fun nostalgia romp but not a game I will ever play again tbh, if I ever wanna play Sinnoh again it will be base games.

Worst pokemon game though? Probably up there since it was a 1:1 remake all the work was done for Ilca, yet the game was full of bugs and glitches.

The bugs and glitches I’ll give the programmers a pass as they are easy to patch out with a few updates. The Gen I games are sort of bad in terms of glitches. I mean there’s the infamous MissinNo glitch that can corrupt your entire game, Glitch City which can softlock your game, Focus Energy did the opposite of what it was supposed to do, and the fact that Ghost types couldn’t damage Psychic Pokémon despite in game text saying that Ghosts are Super Effective against Psychic Pokémon.

Not to mention the story is ridiculous in Lets Go. Blue is considered a well known trainer and Red exists in the world but for some reason...we're playing Red's entire story as a different character. this should have been set during the 3 year time skip between gen 1 and gen 2 or even after gen 2. pokemon i choose you (the film) had a perfect blended Kanto with pokemon from multiple generations appearing. it would have been great if we played through the same Kanto. why the heck is Blue famous otherwise?

The story should have been about the rise of Archer and the other team rocket executives and they should have had different encounters than the original games. hell they could have showed us Silver appearing and trying to take control of team rocket and arguing against archer for control of team rocket.

I consider the Kanto in LGPE to be completely separate from the ones we all loved much better and that had more interesting characters. Everyone in the Let’s Go Kanto seem so weird and off and as if it’s an episode of the Twilight Zone. Blaine playing game show host is just strange given nothing in the past has hinted him wanting to have a game show as loving puzzles and riddles doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be a game show host. Just look at the Riddler in Batman. He makes Batman solve a series of riddles and puzzles yet has no desire to put on an elaborate game show complete with a live audience. Even worse is how you still move on no matter how you answer without any consequences other than a battle with a trainer but a single Surf or Hydro Pump will wipe them out quickly. Opal actually lowered you Pokémon’s stats if you answered incorrectly and thus could make things more difficult for you. Lt Surge and Sabrina’s puzzles weren’t nearly as bad as they were in the past but Koga’s seemed more annoying than before and Erika’s became boring. Even the TR Grunts were dull and they had some of the best lines in the games before LGPE.

i really liked the punishments in Opal's gym, they should do things like that in future games. one thing i always wanted to happen was for evil teams to cheat during battle. like sending out 2 pokemon on their first turn and we have to wait until the second turn to make it a double battle, so the first turn is 2 on one. and using items to inflict status on our pokemon during the same turn they attack, like throwing a smoke screen to lower our accuracy or throwing flame and toxic orbs at us. it would make the battles more interesting since ALL grunt battles are extremely easy
