I didn't think the departure was that bad compared to past ones:

- May/Max got a rushed 5 minute sendoff

- Brock's departure at the end of DP was only 30 seconds

Brock had many departures though. DP Ending was rushed because of BW in the first place, so yeah -__-
Even if rushed, it still was better than BW's. Atleast they had BGMs playing there. YES. "Tears After the Cloudy Weather". Did the Anime Studio forgot they have two CDs of awesome music? It was bad to watch the entire BW season with the same 7 songs playing over and over.

May's leaving came at the end of a battle with Ash that resulted in a draw and cemented their friendship, and there was a nice moment of Ash being very "older brother" to an upset Max.
Ash and Brock parted ways as strong friends.

Iris and Cilan make a big deal throughout DA about going to Kanto, are there for two minutes and then clear off to Johto in a snap decision that came right out of left field.

Let's go to the beach, each.
What a sad episode. I'm pressed that Team Rocket got so much screen-time during such an important departure episode, but I should have expected this to happen; I mean this is still BW after all. It was nice to see Ash and the others in action one last time though; that was satisfying. Vermilion City looked like any other city though which was a disappointment; it's like the animators can't be bothered to make cities look dynamic anymore. I'm glad Iris and Cilan left via train as opposed to them walking to Johto; was that the Magnet Train or a generic train? Anyway, the flashbacks were cute and the episode brought tears to my eyes, from sadness this time.

I just saw the episode for real. lol @ Iris thinking Gyarados is a dragon type. I quite like that gag despite only occurring twice.

Their exit is very, very sudden though. My Japanese isn't great and I haven't seen DA10-18 but it seems like Ash and Iris' paths were already decided prior to being here? It doesn't seem so random that way. The fact that Iris and Cilan don't even seem to care is quite odd either way.

The funny thing about Team Rocket? Not only did they get all the attention, they even went out of their way to animate new motto footage just for this occasion! To be honest I love how absolutely ridiculous Jessie looked trying to convince Ash that James was right there with her. I actually kind of liked the filler part of the episode. Come to think of it, it makes perfect sense. The Best Wishes writers are much better at writing filler than serious plots. It's no wonder we got entertaining filler and a rushed abrupt ending.

Cilan mentioned the Linear Motorcar (Magnet Train) in Yamabuki City (Saffron City), so yeah that's how they went to Johto. Nice reference.

May and Ash already had a good - bye type episode with her battle against, it showed a lot about there relationship, they got pretty much an entire episode on that. They showed Max cry and care about every one, unlike these guys

I still don't understand why Iris was even apart of the group in the first place, no expiation nothing? Than, to make matters worse she doesn't even cry?? At least we had a reason why Dento went with Ash, not crying either though, which is strange since he seemed the kind of guy to do that. Guess the BW trio weren't that close after all :(

Don't forget the ribbon that they shared!

I think Iris was there because they were trying to make it like the original series - Ash plus a girl who wants to be a type specialist plus a guy who acts like their personal chef and tour guide. I think that the writers proved once and for all in this series that they can't write a decent story for a type specialist

Haven't been keeping up that much with every episode, but did Iris or Cilan mention earlier that they would be in Kanto for about an hour before moving on to Johto? I think I remember back in DP, Brock was running around getting souvenirs for his family at the last second, showing that he would go back to Pewter rather than just follow Ash to Pallet. Not to mention the Pokemon doctor episode (which came out of nowhere, but at least it was one episode before the end of DP). Here, Ash announces he's going back to Kanto, Iris and Cilan decide to follow him, they reach Kanto then... they leave Kanto in five minutes? Unless Iris only now finds out the dragon gym is in Johto (she's not that well-informed, especially about non-Unova Pokemon what with thinking Charizard was a dragon-type)?

It can't be that sudden, can it? Well, I could say its BW, of course it could be that sudden, but I'm trying not to fall back on that explanation. Despite what sounds like wasting half the episode on another generic Team Rocket scheme.

What I find more odd is how none of Ash's travel companions go to Pallet anymore. Between Dawn and Iris/Cilan they left before Ash went back home.

May and Max were the last characters to actually go to Pallet.

Well, this is what I thought : BW wasn't meant to be a sad season. Almost no sad episode, no sad departure... I miss theses episodes. Now, it's like all rainbow and it's not the same.

Careful? Where's the fun in that?

Yah, it was a messed up version of the original trio :(
Not saying they were my favorite group but compared to what happened. I just wish they showed some emotion, it was likely just didn't care :(

Oh well, Iris never did give us a reason to think she was good friends with them I guess.

About what Cybs said, hopefully the next group comes to Ash's home this time.

Was one of the few who actually liked that the episode wasn't an emotional sob-fest like Diamond and Pearl's was. It was " sad " to the point that it was hammy. I got pretty much what I expected; a more action oriented episode with the sense that these characters aren't gone for good at the end ... because they're not. Even after their respective Specials we'll likely see both of them again.

Alexa is the hero that Kalos deserves. I love how she's considerate one minute and completely disconnected from everyone the next. She's a friend but she isn't obsessed or clingy like most of Ash's friends.

Does alexa....possibly have a thing for ash?

A wild cougra appears!

So, Iris and Dento don't seem to care about Ash as much as he cares about them eh? Not even one drop of tear?

Might be a cultural thing. In some cultures it's not acceptable to cry in public, especially if you're male (Cilian). Have to remember that Unova is a foriegn country and the writers are intentionally trying to present it as a world apart from the Japan-centric regions.

Okay, we get it, you hate Iris. Jesus, why are you so passively-aggressively spiteful? All because she calls Ash a kid and has defeated him in battle. They're good friends, move on already. I don't hate Dawn for beating May.

Everything stays.
Erf... And I thought they could at least do their departures right.
Iris, Cilan and even Ash kept their fake smiles until the end. No tears, or nothing that could really make me cry. Team Rocket steals the show and, for once, I think they shouldn't have appeared here. The main trio deserved way more than that.
It saddens me to notice that Iris and Cilan only got this, as all the other main characters got way more. They got 3 years instead of the usual 4 (or more) and their departure episode was thrown away like it was nothing important. I guess writers wanted to end this up as soon as possible so they could move on after the overall mess they did.
Goodbye Iris, Cilan... You're going to miss me. I cared about you all the way. You were not bad at all, as companions, really.

That's not even half of it, it started the hate sure but more piled onto that, this episode didn't make her look any better either :(

To be fair this episode didn't make any of the characters look better; in fact, it kind of made Ash seem a bit emotionless. I mean Iris and Cilan decided to leave and Ash was like "okay." He didn't seem that bothered by their departure and it made the whole thing feel hollow imo. The episode also felt wasteful to me because while it was sad that Iris and Cilan were leaving, the episode itself felt almost too light-hearted what with the Team Rocket thing going on. It was still a nice episode, although I can't quite put a finger on what I actually liked about it. It's a weird feeling. It's like I'm sad and elated at the same time.

The train scene gave off one impression: The writers were ready to move on.

It really makes you feel sad for Iris and Cilan because the amount of hate these two have gotten is unreal. It's like they're the ones no one will sit with at lunch. They're the "unpopular" kids and it's truly heartbreaking.

I doubt that, they were very well received at the start even if they didn't get as good development as they should of. Also its better they had shorter runs compared to the other characters in the show, 3 years is enough for characters without a token collecting quest.

You have to admit having someone following some random person around with no reason to whatsoever is kind of a poor writing choice... they could have given her some sort of reason
