Beta Melee

After the popularity of the other Beta Threads, I've decided to put up one for our favoruite game 4-play Nintendo fighting game, Super Smash Brothers Melee. Here we go!

WHAT WE KNOW:

Ganondorf was to use that giant sword. Not only does his trophy prove this, but Debug menu pictures show him using it. The reason for trashing it was most likely because he became a clone.

Ditto was to be in a Pokeball, as refereneced by Debug Mode.

Topis were to look like the Japanese Ice Climber seals. Beta photos of the English trophy show the seal-like one instead of the yeti. The reason for changing was to keep with the American Version of Ice Climber's yeti version.

The Motion Sensor Bomb was changed. Originally it was called the Proximity Mine, as noted in Beta shots. It had a more trianglar appearance, and the trophy originally said it was from Perfect Dark. The reason for this change is unknown.

There was a beta coffee/bar stage.

Sheik was to be a seperate character, complete with target test.

The beta versions of stages are quite interesting. The Brinstar stage had lowered platforms, Kingdom I had the comeback of the much loved pipes from the N64 game, and the Temple stage had more platforms, even seen in the bonus movie.

Peach's voice was differant. See the video.

THEORIES

The Yoshi Egg may be a beta Item, as it does not appear on the Item Selection and cannot be used in VS. Melees. Why create an item for only one event match? They may as well have used a normal egg, but they appear to have used this instead.

The Ice Climber stage may have been the last stage added. Notice how the icon is to the left, not in line with the others, and also larger in size than other icons. They could have put this at the bottom, or atleast put Game and Watch's stage as an unknown under it, as both share a theme (classic gaming revisited)

Discuss.

Whatever happened to Sonic? No no no, I'm not one of those people, but wasn't it in an interview with Yuji Naka after he'd done some car race, that Sonic was planned to be in SSBM but it never happened?

Reference to Perfect Dark, which was a Rare title that was no longer with Nintendo.

Same reason Giga Bowser, Master Hand and Crazy Hand are not playable and used only for certain events.

Actually, more among the lines of saying he'd be interested in having Sonic in a Smash Bros. title. Not that he was going to be in one.

The Motion Sensor Bomb wasn't going to be called the Proximity Mine. It is called the Proximity Mine in PAL versions of the game, I believe.

What Darrill means, Chris, is that the Yoshi Egg isn't usable by any means except for that sole event match. Giga Bowser and the hands and wireframes and sandbag are playable characters via the debug menu, whereas the item isn't usable even by that means. And, yes, all of the items are in the debug menu, including monster spawns.

Also, there is a Dummy stage, which was left in the PAL version of the game, which I don't have, so I can't access it, and there was to be an Akanea Fire Emblem stage, also in Pal.

I think Sandbag was playable in beta...

^ There are a couple pictures.

And I can't believe it wasn't already mentioned. The test stage! (I forgot the name.), but yeah.. It's got a coffee shop background and stuff.

There's also a place called "Dummy", that's just a black screen with your characters falling forever.

And apparently, it looks like Sheik was suppose to have a break the targets match of her own. It's basically a medium piece of non-colored (gray) land. A little smaller than Pokemon stadium. And it has 3 targets. One on top, one on the left, and one on the right.

I think that it is a bar. It is animated? I can't recall. I was gonna put the Bar up on the first post, but my AOL screwed me over before I could edit.

No. Giga Bowser is not real. You can calm down now.
Lol, yeah, you can play as any character put in the game with AR.

Yeah, and a few posts down, sandbag is a playable character, but for some reason it keeps freezing on me..

I heard it was a coffee shop.

Annnnnd, Ditto.. Actually, when you throw the pokeball with Ditto in it near an enemy, he can do some damage. Originally I hear he was suppose to transform into the same character as you, and fight along side you for a short amount of time. Although I guess they decided to remove that..

Of course! Haven't you played Event Match 51, my friend?

Now Toad is the fake dude.

Weren't the arena symbols in the Pokemon Stadium level the same as the type symbols from the Pokemon TCG in the beta?

I saw it in a screenshot...

That's because Sandbag doesn't have B moves, double jumps, air dodges, shields, grabs, A moves and stuff like that programmed in. All you can do with Sandbag is walking and jumping. You can't even run with Sandbag without the game crashing.

(My own theory): The ice Climber's stage was to continually move, and there was to be another stage (Ice Top, on the debug stage menu) where the camera angle paused for the whole battle, and you only fought on those visible platforms, and this stage would be used for events and such, but they took it out later because they just figured they could pause the stage at any rate.

I think it is like that, for fire and water.
