Prologue
On an island far from the start of a journey, was the Pokemon League of Hoenn.
There, you battled with spirit and heart, and skill and strength side by side with your Pokemon.
Excitement filled the air and was contagious. However, some people lost their tournament spirit with a defeat. There was one particular boy who was very disappointed after his loss. He had worked weeks to earn his entry into the league, only to be defeated by an opponent. His red cap hid his eyes and covered his messy, black hair. He wore a trainer's uniform. HIs yellow mouse companion, Pikachu, perched on his shoulder like a bird and tried to comfort him.
This boy was Ash, a boy who had been on numerous adventures with his friends. One of them was walking down the hall towards him right now. He had a serious face and spiky dark brown hair with tanned skin. He wore a brown shirt with about a million pockets. One had a cookbook, another had a brochure.
After him came May, a girl with brown hair and innocent blue eyes. She wore a red shirt, and a white mini skirt over her blue biking shorts. And compared to her brother, Max, she wasn't the brightest trainer in the world.
Max adjusted his glasses and dusted his green shirt. He was the Pokemon brain of the team, despite the fact that he was the youngest. However, he still had much to learn.
Ash looked up and tried to brighten his face. "Brock, which region should we head to next?" he asked his friend.
"Hm, I read in a handbook that this region named Orre is in need of tough trainers to drive out an evil conspiracy. The reward is a free pass to the Mt. Battle challenge," Brock read. Then he flipped the page. "Mt. Battle has 100 trainers in a row, and the winner gets-"
Ash cut him off. "It's settled. Mt. Battle, here we come!"
"Ash, wait! We haven't settled anything!" May said. She turned to Brock. "Are there any contests there?" she asked hopefully. After all, Pokemon contests were her specialty.
Brock shook his head. "Sorry, May. They do have the evil conspiracy..."
"So I'm coming along, defeating evil, then Ash gets the free pass? Even if I get a pass, it's not like it's worth it! To me, at least..."
"May, we could use your help," Ash reminded her. "We're a team."
May sighed. "I' ll think about it."

May sat at the park bench, feeling hopeless. If she went to Orre, she'd have to retire her passion for contests for a while. If she didn't go, where would she go?
"Hey," said a familiar voice.
May looked up to see a familiar scornful face. He had smirking green eyes with matching green hair. May recognized him as her rival. "Hi Drew," she said quietly.
"You're not your usual self today," Drew said, sitting down next to her.
"Who asked you?" May shot back.
"Nobody did, that's obvious," Drew remarked rudely.
May stayed quiet and stared at her feet.
"May, something's up, and I know it. Why don't you just tell me?" Drew asked, surprised that May hadn't flipped out because of his fake rude additude.
May sighed. "My friends want me to come with them to Orre, and there are no contests there."
"That's what most co-ordinators think," Drew said.
May seemed really surprised. She stared at Drew. "What do you mean?"
Drew smiled at her curious tone. "It's not like I'm going to tell you-"
"What?" May interrupted angrily.
"If you come with ME to the Orre region, I can SHOW you what I mean."
"But what will Ash and-" May started.
Drew got up from the bench and looked at her. "I'll talk to them, okay?"

"If my sis goes with you, I'm coming with you too," Max said, after hearing the news. He wasn't going to leave his sister behind.
"If it's fine with Drew, it's fine by me," May said.
Drew smirked. "You have my approval."
"The ferry leaves tomorrow at noon. Don't be late!" Brock said. May watched her friends head to their hotel rooms.
"See ya," she whispered.
The new trio went to their hotel room. They made a left down one hallway and walked a while to go to their room.
"We're sharing a room?" May asked.
"I'm not the richest kid in the world, okay?" Drew said, exasperated.
"Sorry," May muttered.
Drew nodded and reached into the pocket of his purple jacket. His hand came out with a card, which he showed to a device on the door. A light on the device glowed green, signaling that it had been opened. Inside was a room with two beds. The walls were lined with cheery yellow, and a window presented a view of the sea. May ran to it, setting her waist pack on a table and gasped in bliss.
"You can see the ocean," she whispered.
"Beach bum," Max murmured.
"Gosh it's late. Max-" May stated, ignoring his comment.
Max had already taken off his glasses and climbed into one of the beds. "I know, it's bedtime."
May was relieved that for once, she didn't have to remind her brother to go to bed. She untied her bandana and waist pack and paused.
Drew could see the red rising into her cheeks. There were only two beds. She stood there, blushing while Drew took off his jacket.
"Drew, there's only one bed left."
Drew glanced at the bed. "Go sleep with your brother, then."
May glared at him before looking over at her brother. "Max, scoot over, I'm going in."
Max managed to mutter a "good night sis" before dozing off again after moving towards the wall.
May soon fell asleep, too, but Drew couldn't get those eyes shut. He glanced at the siblings and noticed how cozy they were together. Family love. He felt jealous of Max. He listened to the light snoring of Max and soft breathing of May and finally fell asleep too.
