Beyond the Rainbow! (873)

Welp, I guess fans of Goodra's best bet is if it comes back for the pokemon league.

I am sure if Ash kept it, and say the fairy gym was 3 vs 3, I am sure they would have found a way to make a fairy KO goodra without goodra taking any wins. I was sort of hoping to see it lose, but alas it is gone and most likely better off I guess.

From a villains point of view, coming up with a scheme that takes more then one episode to resolve is almost like a win for them. Even though we do not get any of the "nice guys" type of development for Team Rocket, this 2 part story is some of their more nefarious work. The situation suited them well and unfortunately, was open to being exploited.

It is sort of a bummer that Ash does not get to keep the powerhouse for his team but its for a good reason. I think that helping to keep the newly earned peace in the marshlands is a worthy use of Goodra's talents.

It's amazing how Ash and Goodra will always be friends no matter how far there apart from each other.

It's amazing how people think this is amazing despite ALL the times it's happened.

Like, can TR not exist anymore? They provide nothing to the story and are just a nuisance. They get destroyed every time and then just come back for the same thing to happen. If it weren't for them, this episode probably would have been the best of X and Y.

8/10
would have been 10 if TR was not involved.

Too old for your rubbish..
I only watched the dub version of this a few days ago because I've been on holiday, but now I've watched this and the episode before, I must give a little credit to whoever voiced Florges, because I actually adored it's dub cry, which is unusual for me..

I just wish Ash could have a blue Florges because after now watching it twice, I've actually began to think that they look pretty good together..

The duration of Goomy/Sliggoo/Goodra's adventure with Ash aside, I was very content with it's departure.

Regardless of the duration, I think we saw Goodra's personality throughout and in addition to this, we saw just how much Goodra meant to Ash. Besides, lots of people like a underdog turning out to be a hero.

Returning to the episode at hand, I was quite satisfied with the TR plot they went with here. It was more sinister than we are used to and I fully expected the water to flood out into the wetlands but Goodra's rain dance was an excellent decision. The focus was obviously Goodra's departure which I must admit was quite emotional (considering the short time we had with him) but I think this is where Goodra's story had to end...for now.

Anyway, farewell Goodra, see you in the league (hopefully) or sooner (clutching at straws).

Great episode, onto the next one!

Definitely felt the release of Goodra came too quickly, but oh well. The same things been addressed already, and there's nothing else to say on the matter.

Still, that departure was a tear jerker. From all the emotional releases by Ash, this was no exception.

I'll miss Goodra, especially since we didn't get a lot of time with it.

There are alot of mediocre and some downright uninteresting episodes in the Pokémon-anime. But occassionally there are episodes that are absoutely sensational. This is one of them. Beyond the Rainbow and Defending the Homeland have to be the best episodes of the entire XY series so far. For me the two episodes were a rollercoast of emotion, action and drama. It was amazing.

The goodbye scene
This is one of the best farewell scenes in the entire series. It's was really nice to see Ash actually crying when he was hugging Goodra and promising that they would always stay friends. There aren't that many episodes that show that tender and affection side of Ash and few that will show him actually in tears. It really shows you how much he cares for his Pokémon and how strong his bond with them is. I also like the fact that Ash told Goodra to stay - which is what it really wanted but didn't want to say. It again shows how much he cares and demonstrates a lot of character on his part.

Team Rocket
I actually hadn't expected Team Rocket to be responsible. Even for them this was way too far. In these two episodes Team Rocket once again cross the line from comic relief to becoming villians. They manipulated a Pokémon that just wanted to help it's friend so they could steal the only thing that was keeping said friend alive. Then they blame it on Goodra and attack Goodra hurting it badly. And to round it off they take Pikachu from Ash again. If there was dobut as to whether Team Rocket were evil - I think this episode might settle it.

Pikashippy
There's a really cute scene at the end where Ash hugs Pikachu after they escape Team Rocket's aircraft and Ash says his name soflty. Ash also risks his life asking Goodra to throw him onto Team Rocket's aircraft so he could save Pikachu.

10/10

I don't like how the writer's had Ash get rid of Goodra, they could've used it as an obstacle bar for Ash's other Pokémon to try rise up to and improve until it didn't matter that Goodra was a Psuedo-legend, because all the other Pokémon were at or somehow above its level of power

Well I didn't love nor hate Goodra, so my feelings regarding him staying at the marsh are mixed. On one hand I didn't think it should've left Ash's team this fast, but at least his farewell moment was highly emotional. :)

I have to stick with the side that think this was a good episode. It did feel a bit half baked in places (I feel Florges should have maybe got more blatant remorseful moments, and there could have been some explanation why the rest of the team wait until Ash has done the whole job to initiate the flying Pokemon to help) and I almost feel like the plot was stamped together at the last minute. There wasn't really a lot of foreshadowing before hand. Soooo....were the trio on it the whole time? Are they the reason Florges invaded or did she just decide it was a better option than just asking? If so why did Florette only heal when the water revived a second time?

Still I did find Florges and Goodra sympathetic, even if it was rushed, and it was definitely nice to have another multi episode arc where Team Rocket reminded Ash bluntly they could still be utterly ruthless. I wasn't too upset by Goodra's arc ending. It's nice to see Ash respect Pokemon are not just there to be his comrades, Goomy was forced out of his home and missed his friends. He's a testament of how so many improve through Ash's nurturing, but Ash knows when his work is done.

The dub I felt ruined a bit of the tension however. The original edit felt more chilling, and not just through the soundtrack either. Team Rocket felt more composed and sinister, Florges despite only having Pokespeak, sounded more emotive and distraught, and Ash's indignant disgust at the trio was replaced by blandly read lines like "How evil can you get?".

I think everyone here said it. Goodra's time on the series was too short. And so for this reason, I was not completely moved by its farewell. The episode had a lot of war-like battle and the strategy to free the pokemon on the aircraft was cool to watch. Team Rocket had some of their bada** moments on this one.

4 out of 5 stars

I generally liked the episode. Goodra really had grown on me, it definitely was my favorite member on Ash's team, but unfortunately it's gone. It's so sad, it's almost as if Goodra was created just so Ash could defeat Clemont.

The episode was satisfying enough, it was sad for Goodra to go, but weirdly not sad enough for me. Or maybe I'm just heartless. I'm more upset they got rid of one of the best cast members just for Ash to be going to his 6th Gym with only 4 Pokemon and having his team unbalanced.

I guess, in-universe I get why Goodra had to go, to protect the marsh. And, after reading the comments in this thread, it makes sense to me out of universe too. But I still just have to wonder why the writers actually wanted to get rid of Goodra? Why evolve him up so fast, only to get rid of him? They could have expanded his storyline out for a longer period of time and then gotten rid of him?

I don't know, I guess I just don't understand the reasoning behind such a short arc for something as powerful as Goodra, when they could have extended it out a bit.

Overall though, I really liked the arc, and this 2-part episode in particular. The release at the end was definitely emotional, and I appreciated that, since we don't get to see that side of Ash very often.
