Body "Art" i.e. Tattoos

I'm a-ok with tattoos, as long as they're done tastefully. It doesn't matter if there's a deep personal meaning, or if it's an artistic statement, or if it doesn't mean anything at all. As long as it looks decent, I don't care. Sure, I might make fun of you if you get a Pokemon tattoo, a tattoo of your current ~Tru Luv~, or a tattoo of a Chinese character you don't know the meaning of(or something similarly brainless/overly nerdy), but that's not the same as your tattoo being so horrible and tacky that you should feel bad for ever having gotten it. It's also not the same as your tattoo being a faded, blown-out piece of **** you got at a shady tattoo "artist" who you only picked because they were the cheapest guy around.

All that said, I kind of want a tattoo, but I can't think of anything I'd feel like having on me for the rest of my life(/until I shell out for removal), so I'm not getting one anytime soon.

and looks worse and unprofessional as you age
I get the unprofessional part, but don't tattoo your face/other constantly visible areas of your body and you should be fine. As for looking worse as you age...EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU looks worse as you age. We're all going to be wrinkly old people eventually, at that point nobody'll care if you have an ancient tattoo hidden among your liver spots.

Well, if you don't get a tattoo on a visible place, what's the point in even getting one then?

Not to mention that you might not want your kids to get tattoos (whether that means any tattoos or just for another few years). It's a difficult talk to give to a kid if they know that you have a tattoo. Certainly it would change a child's viewpoint about you if they knew that you, the supposedly omniscient, wise, and mature parent, had something that can be taken as a sign of immaturity or rebelliousness.

The keyword is constantly visible. Most businessplaces want you wearing long pants, for example, so getting a tattoo that's only visible when wearing shorts is fine. Same with one that's only visible if you're wearing a tanktop or something that shows more arm than you would in a professional environment. You could even get one on your forearm if you didn't mind always wearing long-sleeved shirts at work(or if you're working somewhere like a lab where your entire arm is covered all the time anyway).

Of course, what level of tattooing is acceptable will vary from job to job, depending on where you're working, who you're interacting with in the normal course of your work, and so on. Some places might be okay with an always-visible small rose(or something similarly tasteful and uncontroversial), others might want no visible tattoos at all.

And finally, there are people who want tattoos for reasons important to them, and don't really care if other people get to see it!

Ah, I see. But still, if I would have been the kind of person to get tattoos, I would get one where everyone can see it, because then I'd be able to show off. :p

Cause you know it's there and it makes you feel good!
It's like wearing nice underwear even if you're not getting laid... I suppose that idea kind of only works for girls though, but I hope you get my point lol.

Well, I just wear whatever feels most comfy, I don't give a damn about the looks (although it is nice if the comfiest clothes are also the best looking, obviously).

Why?

If you saw a beautiful artist's rendering of a dragon, or a fairy, or a motorbike, would you question why the artist had chosen to paint/draw/scribble on paper instead of concrete? The only difference between having a tattoo on paper vs. your body is that on your body, you will either have it forever or have to pay for a possibly painful surgery to remove it.

If you are willing to take the chance that you won't want the tat in the next several years, then why not go for it? You will have that pretty tat to remind you of a better time in your life for years. Assuming, of course, that the tat was gotten in a good part of your life.

As for "normal" people getting them: the current generation is rather literal minded and has grown up on years of "Just do what you want to do, don't worry about others opinions." talk. To a lot of peeps, a tat is simply artwork on your body and is a personal thing. Whether you got it b/c at the time you were a rebel, or to honor something special, or simply just b/c you wanted a tat, it's acceptable.

I'm okay with tattoos so long as they're simple, those dudes that are covered in things are a bit obsessed I think.

I'm totally indifferent. I don't think I would get one, but I can understand why people do. For me, if I was getting one it would have to be something that really means something to me, something that I've loved or felt strongly about all my life and will continue to, not just some flavour of the month anime character or "cool symbol".

People getting partners names, 90% of the time that ends in regret. Maybe wait until you're married at least before you make that sort of commitment.

You just have to type Bad Tattoos in Google (may not be suitable for kids) for an unlimited supply of questions you don't really want an answer to, but at the end of the day it's a personal choice and I'm sure I do a lot of things that many other people don't think is right, so I'm not going to judge others.

I'm fine with tattooes. I think that they can express a persons feelings about something, beliefs etc.

I can legally get a tattoo next summer, but I dunno if I'll wait longer to get one. I'll most likely wait a few years though :)

Not one for getting a tattoo myself, but if I did get one, I would choose something simple because that has an elegance all it's own which I appreciate.

HAHA!!!! I LOVE googling (any adjective) tattoo!! I do it whenever I can't sleep or am super crazy bored. Some of the things people get...yikes. (I'm actually going to Google "Bad Tattoos" once I am done with this.)

Before I got my current tattoo, I googled like crazy to make sure that my specific design was not so overly done. It is a common tattoo, but the design and placement is not as common...or at least wasn't before I got it. I've been seeing more of the same placement, but still no same design. :D

As for the next one, I'm still in the process of designing and researching. I can't wait!! <3

I really don't see the point in getting a tattoo.

I mean its fine and everything... but still....

Sometimes immoralizing something on one skin is a great way to remember things. As they say, a picture paints a thousand words...

My tattoos mean a lot to me and they are links and hold many memories, My first year at Uni etc. I plan to get "Mother, Father, Sister" tattooed down my back at some point in Thai as a link to my heritage and also because my family mean a lot to me.

Can't you just keep a photo album of those people or anything? Maybe one day, you'll stop liking a family member. What'll you do then?
