*breaks out of chains* ReSTRiCTioNS?

A Curious Breed
In my entire fic experience, I've had a little over six different trashed works, simply because I toss them away for uninterest, or the failure to continue because of life circumstances. However, I still find inspiration every day to write things @-@ The only question is: how much is enough?

How many fics do you think a single person should maintain, and why? For example, I'm almost inspired to start writing an OT fic, which I've never done before, but the thought of A L I C E and the Noob Trials already out make me feel as though I can't have more than one fic. Surely, if this idea does become something in writing, I'd plan for it, but with Madman on the way in December and a lot of prepping between Psychic and I, and Serebeth, things seem chaotic. However, some people (like Dragonfree, for instance) have more than two fics currently out in the open, and only updates after working on her main priorities first.

Not only would it help me, but if someone could explain what a good method for keeping a fic portfolio under control and still enjoying yourself at the same time, then by all means share. Also, if referring to my case specifically, assume I have all the time in the world to write this stuff xP

I guess it varies on the author's abilities and organization skills.

I can usually only work on a single thing at a time, if I'm feeling extra creative, I might write up a one-shot along with the story I'm working on.

don't get the wrong idea, I get tons of ideas flowing in as well, however, I manage to find ways to implement all of my ideas into the current work I'm working on.

I only work on one (two max) fics at a time, and I've managed to finish two 110+ page fics....

plus a lot of shorter ones.

*shrugs*

I'd suggest just working on one or two at a time, and then keep plodding along, and make surethat you finish one or another.

YEAHHHHHHH
I kind of had the same problem with this also. The first time I started writing "Heart of the Sea" and my poem "Wonderful Dusts" at the same time. (I know it's a poem, but it's a long one and also I want it to be good). I sort of lost interest in "Wonderful Dusts" and then started writing "Heart of the Sea" by itself.

Later in May I started writing "Heart of the Sea" and "Mori" at the same time. I then became really sick and took a short break from writing. When I started to become feel better, the "Laughingstock" Comedy One Shot Contest came about and then I decided to write "Take Fifty Five!" sonner then planned because I want to enter that story into the contest. ( I was about to write that story after I finish "Heart of the Sea"). Now I got three fics to worry about! (Lucky "Mori" and "Take Fifty Five!" will be one shots, though I believed "Take Fifty Five!" will be a little on the long side.)

Not only I got three fics worked on, but I also have "The Perrapu Song" and "Pure Distance" on the booth also.

I believed the way to try to finish two or more fics at the same time and also enjoy yourself doing more then one fic would be to maybe have a lot of energy doing it? (Shrugs). Or, what I did was to put a plan on which stories I will do at the same time and also what I will do first. Here's my little plan:

-Finish "Take Fifty Five!" by late June.
-Do "Heart of the Sea" and "Mori" at the same time, and finish both by summer.
-Do "Pure Distance" and "The Perappu Song" at the same time. Planned to do both at Fall.

Pretty much I can handle doing two stories at the same time. Sorry if this little plan of mine doesn't make sense to you.

Hope this little tibit helps.

Um,...this isn't a real problem. Were you just trying to advertise your new fics coming out, or what? The obvious answer is to not take any of this serious enough that it has the chance to become anything but fun. Write what you want to write. There's no set number of fics that you should have. Write what you want when you want to write it.

So the concise answer to the question "how much is enough?" would be that no one can know that but you.

Well ehh...I'll try to explain this o_O

It really depends on what you do everyday. I don't have much free time, so I planned to stick with one fic and when I'm done with it, I'm going to create another one. If you don't want to trash some of your fics (which I'm sure you wouldn't want to do) you could possibly do this...

This week, you slowly work on writing, let's say for example, A L I C E.

Next week, you work on Serebeth.

And so goes on.

Now, if ya got all the time in the world, I still suggest that you work on one fic on one day. That way, you'll be done with the chapter (or most of it) and post it sooner. Then, you work on another fic, and so goes on.

Summer is coming real soon, so I think you'll have enough time...if you aren't traveling anywhere or something o_O

Just me
Well, the way I do it is simple.

I start a fic when I get inspired.

I write more of each fic when I feel like writing that particular one.

Of course this results in overall slower chapters for each fic, but counting all the fics together, you actually write faster because when you have many genres of fics to write, you're likelier to feel like writing at least one of them.

Basically, if people read all your stuff, they won't be disappointed. If they read only one, they probably will. But you will probably enjoy it more, because you can always write what you feel most like writing.

I completely agree with Dragonfree on this one, write as much as you want, and if you want to quit a fic, then quit it, chances are you'll come ack to it again at some point. Of course, its obvious I'm speaking from personal experience here >.>.

But I suppose it depends on how you feel about the readers. If you know they'll read whatever you write (which I'm sure applies to you, at least, I know I will), then write whatever you want. But if you think you'll lose readers through making too many fics (which I doubt) then perhaps concentrate on one or two. But the obvious way to tackle that would be to write a new fic anyway, but just dont post it until you feel its a good time to.

Anyway, thats what I think.

I think its okay to have multiple fics, but it depends on your writing speed and...well. xD Try to make a plan on which fics you want to work on and when you have to get a chapter finished and posted(In other words, a deadline).

You can alternate between A L I C E, the Serebeth Noob Trials and Madman.
Or just write whichever fic you get the most inspiration for...I think I've just repeated what everyone else was saying. X_x''

Friendly POKéMON.
Ditto PDL.

I would advise you to have as little fics as you can, since quality always sacrifices quantity, and vice versa. Which would you prefer, anyways: one good fic or a multitude of pathetic ones?

EDIT: I don't men to imply anythoing, just so you know; no offenses given, and I hope none will be taken.

The Best of the Best
I only post 1 at a time, maybe 2 MAXIMUM. I have always created stories but could never devote myself to anything long enough. Extermination is THE first time I could devote my self to anything like this. I think what you need is a motivtor. I motivate myself by planning ahead, so you have to keep going. It also helps when you got a few loyal fans. But I say, its better to write only 1 fic than to write multiple fics but leave them.

TOMATO BERRY!
I've lost several fics cause I lost interest in them. I've learned that if you somwhat manage your fic-ing *weird word* you'll be able to write more on one than another. I go with the one that interest me most and the one I really want to see succeed. Also, it relies on your abilty to multitask and keep your fics seperate. I had to put one on hold so I could work on semi-hippies. It worked, so it kinda depends on you. ^_^. hope that helps.

As always, be kind to the mime.;122;

When I was younger and naive, I was working on five at a time. They were all horrible now that I look back at them.

Now that I am older, I work on one fic at a time. Why? Because I obsess over them, wanting to get every word perfect.

Alas, though, it all depends on the writer though. Write whenever you feel inspired to (which isn't good advice when you have a deadline); or write everyday in at least one fic, which is what the professionals do.

Jetx

hooray, it's Jetx!
Well, writing one is good enough to me. It makes it all much easier. I chose to continue Claxia as it had the most potential, and I left the pokemon fics I was writing to rot.

No more than two is my advice

The Compromise
Wells, I tried keeping to one fic...

And failed miserably. XD I prefer just to keep to one/two, for I don't want the plots to get mixed up. So I end up harboring these odd ideas for ages until I get around to writing them. XD Which is probably why I have a bad short-term memory, all the space is used up by the ideas. XD
