Midori's bridge trap didn't even make much sense to me, because she had set it up as a method for preventing thieves from stealing the Pokemon that she was guarding, but it's hard to imagine anyone (other than the Rocket-dan) wanting to steal the Pokemon at the nature preserve in the first place since they were all so common and not worth taking.

How come this episode happened at a so-called hidden village yet we never saw more than a single cottage? Bulbasaur seemed so cold and distant too.

The supposed village featured here seemed to be a misnomer, and the only place that was meant to be a secret was Midori's house, which was hidden to keep the Pokemon there safe.

lol I was thinking the same thing. I just watched this episode today for the first time in I'm not sure how long, but I totally didn't remember her living with the Pokémon. I also didn't remember Misty watching to catch more than Water-types that early on. I like that she had that aspect of her character, though I wish they allowed her to catch more of a variety like Brock. Oh well. Bulbasaur is a cutie, and I love that he was introduced by protecting weaker Pokémon in the forest

This episode made me love Oddish's weirdness. Too bad he wasn't caught by Misty. I've always loved Ash's Bulbasaur too and this episode proved to me that he was a good leader.

I also didn't remember Misty watching to catch more than Water-types that early on. I like that she had that aspect of her character, though I wish they allowed her to catch more of a variety like Brock.

I figure that her desire to capture a Grass-type here was simply due to the writers not knowing how to handle her character this early in the saga. I now wonder what she'd be like if she had caught the Nazonokusa, however.

The first of the Ash catches the Kanto starters trilogy was alright. It was amusing seeing Ash fanboy all over Bulbasaur (to an extent he really didn't over Charmander and Squirtle in their debut episode). The Misty/Oddish scene was a bit odd and I wonder why the writers didn't have Oddish go with Misty.


This is the first time Brock openly crushes on a girl even though he acts retroactively out of character by being embarrassed. Sure, in the Cerulean episode he ask Jenny on a date but this is when we see Brock actually swooning even if its in private.

At least Ash actually caught Bulbasaur unlike the other two that just followed him

This hidden village place seemed like an orphanage even though I didn't get why Melanie was so paranoid that thieves would even want those weak Pokemon in the first place.

The hidden village where Bulbasaur lived seemed like the kind of place that no one would bother searching for, so I wonder why there were so many traps when Team Rocket were the only bad guys dumb enough to want Oddish and the other abandoned Pokemon. When Ash caught Bulbasaur, I felt relieved that Bulbasaur's attitude softened up.

Supposedly poachers often showed up looking to steal Pokemon from the village. I don't really get why anyone would bother trying to steal such below average Pokemon either, but it was something that was apparently a huge problem.

My favorite scene - or scenes plural - were when Ash successfully caught Bulbasaur at the end and when the wooden bridge broke and Brock got separated from the others. Also it was weird how Misty liked Oddish despite it being a grass Pokemon and not a water type like she usually gets interested in. Team Rocket's flying stadium was a cool invention although it didn't really affect the plot that much and it didn't even have a full baseball theme. 7/10

damn, this episode is one of the more entertaining ones. i just made an account for this website to comment on this thread cause i had to say it somewhere. the misty/oddish part of the episode was my favorite, and the two really seemed to get along, i was sad when i realized misty wasn't gonna end up having the cute oddish on her team maybe it would've been too much to have ash catch bulbasaur AND misty catch oddish, or maybe that early on they just wanted misty to have water pokemon. im not sure, but nonetheless, a cute episode.

I assumed that the writer of this episode knew that Kasumi was going to remain a Water-type specialist for the most part, so they knew better than to have her capture a Grass-type Pokemon in this episode.

Episode: 7/10

Also this episode is better than the Squirtle episode, it doesn't help that Squirtle is the less iconic between Ash's Kanto starters.
