Burglars snapped the neck of an elderly woman's budgie in front of her after she refused to hand over money, police have said.
The 78-year-old woman was also threatened with her own walking stick, pushed into a chair and then locked in her own house by the two raiders.

The pensioner was sitting in her living room, on Whitchurch Road, Cardiff, watching television, when the burglars burst into her home.

South Wales Police said they demanded the woman give them £100, but she refused and said she had no such money in her house.

Officers said the men threatened her before searching the house and stealing £65.

But before leaving the house, police said, one of the men killed her pet budgie by snapping its neck in front of her.

As they fled the scene, they locked her inside the house.

Detective Sergeant Stuart Wales, of Cathays CID, said: "This was a despicable crime on an elderly lady who is in poor health, where we believe these men have targeted her because of her age and because she lives on her own.

"She has been very brave throughout the whole ordeal but has been badly shaken up.

"The victim is deeply upset because not only has she been the victim of a crime, she has also lost her pet budgie, her soulmate, in a brutal and disturbing manner."

The burglar who killed the bird was wearing a black beanie hat, a dark scarf across his face, a dark tracksuit and dark woollen gloves with a white square-type pattern on them.

He was possibly in his 20s and was thin with a pale complexion.

The other man was about the same age but shorter, and had a distinctive walk. He wore similar clothes and a brown anorak.

It's Lil' Kim, ho!
:( I really don't know what to say.

Part of me understands the feeling of losing (and the attachment) of a pet but then again, at least they didn't kill the woman.

This a stupid question but what's a "Budgie"? Is it a type of bird?

Anyways, thats pretty cruel. I mean they took the money, so they could of just left, but instead they kill the "Budgie"? And right in front of her too. The guy who did must have no moral conscience.

It's a kind of small parrot/canary-like bird, I guess.

But anyway, that's just low, when I read this at first, I thought they had actually snapped the woman's neck, but still, that was pretty unnecessary.

I find this so upsetting, not only were the men burglarizing an innocent pensioner, but to snap the neck of her budgie? That's just taking it way too far. Some people need THEIR necks snapping ;/

I always feel worse when the story involves animal abuse. Hearing about an animal dying to me is usually worse than hearing of a person dying.

Did you post Blockateel for the sake of posting Blockateel or was this post supposed to be funny?

Anyways, this story makes me feel very sad. An old woman in poor health, and her only friend and companion killed in front of her. Things like this really make me feel terrible.

Hmph. Some people have no sense of compassion.

At this time, I'm busy grilling their sea kittens over an open fire.
