Note that I'd experiment with these ideas if I had a GBA, or two (for trading).
I'm looking through the site and trying to think of ideas of how to have a Pokemon and its Nature work to all advantages (not including Ditto, Unown, Smeargle, and Wynaut/Wobbuffet--their movelists are limited).
The recommendations of PotW are okay, but we need to be a bit more flexible.
So... I'm starting with Butterfree, studying the various natures, and finding out how to put each Nature to its advantage. Also, I've taken the disadvantage of each Nature and provide at least one move to "even the odds", so to speak.
[For Hardy, Docile, Serious, Bashful, and Quirky... since these are the Neutral Natures, just pick whatever your style is. Also, if you plan to use Butterfree outside of Battle/Contest/Whatever (i.e. on the field), give it Flash and/or Secret Power in the mix. Butterfree with the Flash Move I call "Glowing Butterfree". Butterfree with Secret Power (for opening Secret Bases outside Battle) I'll call "Nest-Building Butterfree". With both Flash and Secret Power, I call them "Home-Warming Butterfree" (don't ask)]
First, I shall list Attack-Oriented Butterfree (these are all Battle Move Lists... I'll have to work on Contest Movelists another time.)
-----------------
Butterfree w/ Lonely Nature (+Attack, -Defense)
Moves:
-Gust
-Safeguard
-Sleep Powder
-Psybeam
Items: Figy Berry, Focus Band, Leftovers, Choice Band, or Liechi Berry
I call this the "Lone Butterfree" list (bad wordplay on Lone Ranger, I know). Anyway, Gust is for the STAB, of course (since Butterfree are part Flying Type, and also I think this is a Physical Attack element, so it'd benefit from the extra Attack stat boost). Safeguard is to protect from any possible critical condition causers. Also, since Lonely Nature would get hit hard due to low Defense, Sleep Powder is a perfect stall tactic. Also, Psybeam is added to the mix for a possibility to inflict the Confused status on your opponent (assuming it doesn't have the Own Tempo ability that prevents Confusion; or is not a Dark-Type, which is immune to Psychic).
For the Items, take your pick: Figy Berry (for health in a pinch), Focus Band (may prevent fainting; helpful for making up for low Defense), Leftovers (for some reason, this tends to be a popular healing hold item), Choice Band (be sure to pick Gust or Psybeam, so you don't get stuck in an endless loop of non-attacking moves), or Liechi Berry (to kick up the Attack stat when things are getting tough).
----------------------
Butterfree w/ Brave Nature (+Attack, -Speed)
Moves:
-Gust
-Stun Spore/Sleep Powder
-Silver Wind
-Hyper Beam
Items: Figy Berry, Macho Brace, Leftovers, or Liechi Berry
I call this the "Courageous Warrior Butterfree". Anyway, Gust is for the Flying-type STAB. Next, since Speed is a problem for this nature, Stun Spore or Sleep Powder can be used even the odds against speedy opponents. Silver Wind is for both the Bug-type STAB and there's a chance it'll kick up all your stats. Finally, Hyper Beam is in the mix since it'll benefit from the Attack stat boosted by this nature.
For Items, Figy Berry and Leftovers are good for healing. Since Speed is not the name of the game for Brave Natures, a Macho Brace is good for training if you're going for those extra Effort Points. And let's not forget boosting attack with Liechi Berry.
---------------------
Butterfree w/ Adamant Nature (+Attack, -Special Attack)
Move List:
-Gust
-Poisonpowder/Stun Spore/Sleep Powder
-Secret Power
-Hyper Beam
The "Diamond-Hard Wind Warrior Butterfree" is what I'll call this one. Since the Special Attack suffers with this one, you probably won't want a lot of Special Element moves here. So Gust (for the Flying STAB) is your main move here. Next is one of the powder moves... take your pick: Poisonpowder to weaken your opponent as you blow them away with Gust (ha, I tell bad joke), Stun Spore for Paralysis to slow your opponent (or stop them 25% of the time) as you attack, or Sleep Powder for helping you pick up the momentum. Next is Secret Power, which is good for inflicting a status depending on your terrain (again, since Special Attack is low, you won't want a whole lot of Special Element moves). And finally, Hyper Beam for a heavy hit (provided you're not up against a Ghost-type).
The Item Choices: Figy Berry or Leftovers for health, or Liechi Berry to boost your Attack in a pinch. Can't think of any other items here.
-------------
Butterfree w/ Naughty Nature (+Attack, -Special Defense)
Move List:
-Gust
-Supersonic
-Silver Wind
-Safeguard
Items: Figy Berry, Leftovers, or Liechi Berry
This one I'll call the "Bad Boy/Girl (depending on gender) Butterfree" <chuckle>. Anyway, Gust for the Flying-type STAB (and to benefit from the extra Attack). Since Special Defense is an issue, Supersonic would be good for screwing up Special Attack users if lucky (assuming the opponent in question isn't one with Own Tempo). Silver Wind provides the Bug-type STAB, and (if lucky) a good boost to all stats. Finally, Safeguard to protect from critical conditions.
Items: Figy Berry or Leftovers for health, or Liechi Berry for extra Attack in a tight spot. Again, couldn't think of any other item ideas.
If anyone wants to make adjustments to these, and/or experiment with these possibilities (again, I'd do so if I had a GBA with some Pokemon games), feel free to do so. Next post I'll list ideas for Defense-oriented Butterfree (Bold, Relaxed, Impish, and Lax).
Take care and God bless, everyone! ;249-d;
