I have searched the forums but haven't found anything like this sorry if it does!
A lot of people are concerned about buying games off ebay, and rightly so as there are alot of fakes, but with this guide, you should be able to get one without any problems:

  • Look for the colour of the cart- pkmn games are not grey!
See if the game is complete- most fake games are cart only, if they do have a box, it is usually different to the real thing, they never have the wireless cable.
Look for a real photo, the game out of its box preferably, if it is taken off Google, it is likely to be fake!
Try and buy from your home country, most of the fakes are from places like Hong Kong.
Be wary if it is at some strange starting price like £8.88
Check feedback (not 100% accurate as some people cannot tell the difference and leave positive anyway)
Many of the traders who have loads of games to sell buy cheap fake imports, try and buy from someone who is not a trader
    Report fake items
If you are still unsure buy from elsewhere!

Also, I've noticed that the fake Pokemon Emeralds all have a pattern of shiny squares on the front. The real box has no pattern.

That's the most important.

And, just to be safe, go with a European version. Most counterfeits are American and Japanese.

Correct! I have noticed the squares on Emerald boxes alot. Yes it is best to go for the PAL versions, there should not be a problem transferring pokemon from PAL to NTSC due to the lack of area code, it's only different languages that are the problem I think, if I'm wrong, please say so. It is usually the same sellers that sell these games, so buy from a different seller.

Check for the official Nintendo seal. If it's not on the front cover, it has to be on the back. If neither, it's fake.

Honestly... just don't buy them on Ebay... to be safe. GBA is the most pirated system (for getting actual cartridges), so it's best to just buy them at a store.
