Calm mind and other stat boosting attacks

Me and another member (SapphireL) got in to a little arguement about attacks, calm mind, swords dance, scary face etc...

Attacks that raise/boost your stats.

But what I just don't understand is why are there such attacks?

Say your in a battle and your pokemons defense is 100, and you use harden, so then you defense is now 101 right.

So after the battle your defense go's back to 100.

So what is the point of haveing such attacks if there only good for one battle? pluse if its going to be a fast battle theres no point in haveing an attack that does nothing when you could replace it with an attack that does some damage.

SapphireL says that you need those attacks so you can be more powerful for that battle. But if its going to be a fast battle there basicly no point.

so can you guys um help use settle this somehow?

My opinion: Such moves are included in order to tip the battle in your favor. They simply help your Pokemon gain an edge over another....clearly if your facing a sweeper, then boosting your stats while it clobbers you is not a good idea. Stat-boosters are very nice moves when used properly and a master trainer may be able to use them in great effect even in fast paced battles.

I'm guessing if a trainer knew that he's Pokemon would get killed in a single hit...then he wouldn't use stat-boosters, know what I mean?

Not fast paced, just a easy battle that you can take a poke out in one hit.

Okay, no one in their right mind is going to try to set up complex combos and stuff against ingame wild Pokemon. >_>; When people use support moves, they use them to fight real, good, human players. Support moves almost always mean the difference between victory or defeat against humans with actual skill. However, the most evil attack ever created, Double Team, is a support move, so watch out! :mad:

I wanna know how you got SapphireL to argue with you. :eek:

K, nub, Poke-basics:

You don't need stat moves in-game.

Against humans, they're used to make your Pokes more powerful so you can trample the competition.

Got it?

Wow, my eyes have never burned like this before. ._.;

Firstly, solely defensive boosters tend not to work in general if they can't be Baton Passed to other Pokemon. However, Pokemon resistant to phazing can freely boost their defences however much they like with little worry (only one I can think that can do this is Cradily, though).

Now onto the juicy attack boosters. These are pivotal to boost the stats of your Pokemon even further and save you turns that would be spent on KOing Pokemon. As an example, let's say your Modest Gardevoir with max Special Attack can only give Suicune a 2KO with an unboosted Thunderbolt. With a few Calm Minds under its belt, though, Gardy will be able to rip through that Suicune in one turn while also being able to keep its insanely high Special Attack. Thanks to this property, your Gardy has increased its usability far beyond its ground-level capabilities.

Stat boosters do plenty of things: they raise your stats, force switches, and also allow you to rip through teams faster and give you more opportunities.Such Pokemon as Celebi, SDcross, and Agiligross would not be anywhere near as great as they are now without their stat boosters.

.........so many words I don't get ;.;

I may be a newb to poke battles but not on forums.

but I just wanted to try it and see what swords dance did.

so I got a absol that had it ( to lazy to train another poke) and went to the guy trathleit sp in new mauviile and battled him.

by attack was already 131 and I kept on doing it after 3-5 times and it said it was maxed out and I looked and it was still 131?

so what happened?

I don't think it's visible on the stat screen.. since I believe the stat boosters moves disappear after a battle, or when you change your Pokémon. But I'm not too sure on the latter.

Because when you use Sword's Dance or Calm Mind, it doesn't show it on the stat screen when you check your Pokémon's stats.

stat boosts (or decreases) remain as long as the pokemon remains in battle, and depending on how much they increase a stat, they can increase or decrease by 50% or 100%. The maximum a stat can increase to can be 300%.

each 50% increase can be refered to as a "stage"

that means that if a pokemon has a base attack stat of 100... and it uses Swords dance (which boosts attack by 2 "stages") it's attack stat has now been increased to 200.

however, since they're only temporary, it'll dissapper if the pokemon is switched... unless it uses Baton Pass... in that case, the pokemon it switches into now has the increase stat.

SapphireL is right because if ur battling with ur frend that has a condition..(OF COURSE YOU DONT WANNA LOSE)and u set off ur MewTwo.. and ur Enemy is MewTwo(too) and ur enemy doesnt have a booster of sp.attack definitely u will win because Calm Mind until ur near to die and use recover and Calm Mind Again until u maxed ur Sp.Attack definitely ur Sp.Attack is higher than ur friends MewTwo...and Psychic until ur friends MewTwo die!
