Can Someone Explain Happiness To Me?

I've been trying to evolve my Golbat with happiness for ages, what do I need to do? What are happiness points? HELP!

give it protein, zinc, etc... Battle with it. Use items on him/her when it's hurt. Do NOT trade it to another game or you'll have to start all over again on trying to evolve it.;148;

if you playin emerald you can use the ev berrys, also use the soothe bell

Does anyone know how you can tell how happy a Pokemon is? (I'm trying to complete my Dex in Emerald and to do that I'm evolving Golbat to Crobat, in case you're interested.)
