Canon in the Pokéuniverse

Yes, I'm new to the forums, but not new to Serebii.net (I used it back in '03 and before) or Pokemon.

I'm wondering on what the canon rule is. The reason I ask is that me and my friend are having an argument on whether Mew is one of the originals. Of course, I'm right (backed up with code in the games), but it made me wonder how canon stands, for example, are only the games canon, or is it more Holocron style, where the games take top, and animé and TCG lower down.

I believe every facet of Pokémon has its own Canon universe. None rules over the other. They're just linked by the use of the exact same characters and places. Their plot, personalities, ties and such only concern their own universe.

At least that's what I think. They do tell the same stories, but they're not linked between facets.

To your original question Mew is one of the original Pokemon if by that you mean the first generation, even if you could only get 150, Mew was still programmed in the game.

Now as to what is Canon, this is a long question, but i'll answer it shortly, unlike Star Wars (the article you linked), Pokemon is not *one* universe or story, each media tells different worlds. Each media is usually a different universe, even same media can be a different universe. The Games Timeline is not the same as the cartoon or the manga.

They are each on their own universe, what happens in one doesn't contradict the other since they are not the same.

I am finishing up a site that deals with what is canon and other mysteries of the pokemon world, it should be done in just a few months now, until then enjoy the splash page if you're interested The Pokeball
