well me and my older brother are having some trouble trading our pokemon. when we go to trade it sits there and never lets us go in to trade. is this some kinda glitch in cord or what? when we tried with our friends it works perfectly fine. but when we try to it doesnt work. we are using regular gba's but also have one gba sp. if anyone can help i'd appreciate it.

First off... check the cord to make sure it's inserted correctly/firmly.
Then, depending on each game, you'll need to get to a certain point for trading. ruby/saphire you'll need to beat the elite 4 if your trading to fire red/leaf green. from fire red/leaf green trading to ruby/saphire/emerald you'll need to get the ruby and saphire plates and give them to celio.
then you need to make sure you have a gba link cable (not a gameboy color cable).

Do you mean to say that both of you used GBAs? 'Cause once I tried to trade with my friend who was using GBA and me using GBA SP and we couldn't trade, then when we both used GBA SPs it worked. If you're both using GBAs then try reversing the connection. Check that you're using a GBA link cable. Also check that your GBA is not charging batteries. Make sure your cable is connected firmly. When you've confirmed all that try trading again.

You should also clean the connection port and the inside of the connecting plugs by blowing into them, maybe there's just too much dust collected in them. Hope it works.

There have been some people that say if you don't use nintendo brand cables that they will not work near as well in the future. Also, how have you cared for that cable? did u do any harsh bending to it? if so the cable may be broke inside and will only work when the cable is lined up. and as for the tradin between different version, I trade between a gbasp and a gameboy player on my gamecube all the time.... never any problems excpet the time i accidently knocked the cable loose (it's a nintendo brand one).
If you don't mind spending the money, i'd say go for a new cable, since as u said, it worked before. It could just be inproper handling.

Wait! I traded my brothers friend. I had I game boy sp and he did to. before when I battle a person. that person had sp. I think you can only trade/battle with the same system.

I go with the person DarkSpectrem you have to treat it with care! :D

no you don't have to have the same system... as i stated earlier i do my trading between a gba sp and a gamecube:gameboy player adaptor and have no problems whatsoever.
And yes... care for your stuff

You will be missed:(
A little off-topic, but...

How do you store a cable when not in use, so you don't break it inside?
