Cartoon Network "My Neighbor Totoro" Review Thread

Dogasu

Frustrated Elf
I totally forgot this was airing tonight, which is why I didn't have this thread up earlier. Anyway, CN is airing Miyazaki Hayao's My Neighbor Totoro tonight starting at 7:00pm EST.

This is my first time hearing the new dub, and I have to say...it's worlds better than the older one. Satsuki actually has a *gasp* decent VA this time, and Mei isn't NEARLY as annoying as she was in the older version.

Anyway, if you get a chance to watch it, I suggest you check it out.

I'm just watching this now at the first commercial, and it's already one of my favorite movies. Just the vibe it gives is amazing. I like the bond between Saki and Mei. It's cute. ^^ Those Soot Sprites look alot like the little black things in Spirited Away, don't they not? @_@

They're the same.

Ah, My Neighbor Totoro...is probably the most overrated Miyazaki film. Call me old and crusted, but I never saw what was so special about it. It's cute, but I found it rather simplistic. It also has a somewhat slow start. Don't get me wrong - I'm not the kind of person who needs action every five seconds to keep my interest - but watching girls running around an empty house never excited me.

Probably my least favorite Miyazaki film overall. Not bad, and I thought it was worth watching, but beyond that, I don't really think it's that memorable.

I figured that it was on purpose, because there are a lot of things I see repeated in Miyazaki's movies. :D

Like in Castle in the Sky you can see the fox-squirrels from Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind, or how in Whisper of the Heart you can see the words "Porco Rosso" engraved on the grandfather clock for a just a second.

I haven't seen the second one you mentioned but I have seen the first one. I realized that after I watched Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, since I had already seen parts of Castle in the Sky. Thanks for that second bit of information, Sierra. :D

Whisper of the Heart is scheduled to be shown on Turner Classic in May, so you can see it then. Just keep an eye out when we get the close-up of the grandfather clock. :D

Yay! I'll need to remember that. I'll have to see what channel it is on my Adelphia Cable Box. X_X

ooh this is my fave movie
i prefer their original voices though
my favoriet part was at the beginning when those things were opening and closing their mouths

The movie was very cute, the plot seemed simple though. Over all the general movie was good. =]

Man though, totoro had one big mouth XD... and that Cat vehicle looked a lot like Teto >_>, lol XD

I like how they reuse characters, or at least the look very close to other characters (the human characters that is)... The girl looks like Nausicaa and the boy reminds me of the main male in that very sad anime movie I own... Grave of the fire flies...

I only caught the last half hour of it. I need money to buy it on DVD! Blast those Yu-Gi-Oh Trading Cards! They're eating away at my wallet like Munchlax eats away at ANY food! ;munchlax;

I saw this movie once, when I was about five. I'm not sure which dub it was.

What's this Whisper of the Heart thing? Maybe I could rent it, the title sounds interesting...what's it rated?

Overall, very cute movie. I loved it. ^..^

Totoro...adorable. The catbus...same. Satsuki's VA sounded like she could've used a little bit more emotion, but other than that, everything was great.

I'd been wanting to see this movie for quite a long time now, and I'm glad that I finally got a chance and that I wasn't disappointed.

One thing though...the music. Nothing wrong with it, but my older brother once had a bunch of music from this soundtrack on his computer and MP3 player and such. Thing is, he's the kind of fan who's more interested in things like Ghost in the Shell and Record of Lodoss War, so it just strikes me as slightly odd that he'd have stuff from a...less mature film such as this.

It was okay, however, it doesn't contain very much actions. So this is last in my Miyazaki favorites. The bonds between two sisters is truly blissing.
