"The Electric Tale of Pikachu" has major censorship. Some would argue that it is for the best.

There was a thread some time back about this issue. Basically, while censorship is generally frowned upon, at the time, Pokémon was everywhere. Nearly all of the kids were into it, and the media reported on this; parents knew of this even if they didn't understand it. So when the comic/manga was released here, it was apparent that Viz really wanted to show it was for children.

The Electric Tale of Pikachu is infamous for this, but I honestly believe Viz did the right thing in censoring it. Because heaven knows parents are morons when it comes to Japanese comics. At the time (which is still true to this day), when they were to see Pikachu on a cover, they would buy it without looking further into it because "PIKACHU". Once they get it, they would then start screaming about why porn was given to their child.

And don't pretend this hasn't happened before and still happens today. It may not have been with Pokémon directly, but with other anime, oh good Lord, it's a wonder anime still managed to continue being mainstreamed with all the complaints from parents about porn disguised as cartoons being sold to their children.

There are cartoons meant for age groups outside of kids? Who da thunk it?

Here is all the censorship I can think of. You have been warned about the first two.

Pokémon Pocket Monsters censorship: http://snarp.dreamwidth.org/40223.html - Click at your own risk!

Pokémon Adventures censored scene in chapter 133: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/File:pS133_edit.png

Yeaaaaaaah, it's no surprise we haven't gotten a translated Pokémon Pocket Monsters. I've only heard about the manga being pretty off-color, I just hadn't seen anything from it. I can see the Toriyama influence, but not even DragonBall was that vulgar (his other works might've been). Then again, it was rated T/OT here...

But I guess that's where the whole "Legendaries turn into humans" idea in fanfics came from, probably. All the more reason to believe Mew is a girl.

Heh, interesting. It's probably because you don't see anything past the hand and the tinkle-trail, and he did mention sleep-walking, so it wasn't through ill-attempt (unlike that damn Clefairy). I guess the joke is funny in context, but hey, parental bonus for the win.

I have read the first chapter of volume one of the original series. The jokes weren't funny (there's a chance that might have been because gag mangas are generally hard to translate) and the artwork was horrible. You're not missing out on anything.

Censorship in America doesn't have to make sense as long as it keeps all the stupid parents - who are too lazy to raise their own kids and expect entertainment to do it for them - pleased.

DEAR ZUCION! I know this is supposed to be some kind of nature thing, but that looks like hell! I should know, I'm 24 and don't mind this but can't.

I did not know that would happen. This reminds me too much of Bleach.

Apparently Japan thought the gags/jokes were funny. The manga was extremely popular, lasting for 14 volumes.

That should be the case but "IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN". I'm all for censorship, but there should be a limit to the censoring. I could understand the censoring in Electric Tale of Pikachu, but chapter 133's censoring is pretty dumb. "We'll keep in all the blood, the Arbok cut in half, and dark elements, but ooooh, a girl slapping another girl is a no-no."

Outside of illusions like with Zorua, Zoroark, and Latias, I don't think all Pokémon have this, especially Legendaries. But I've seen it a lot in fanfiction that it makes me wonder where the idea came from in the first place.

Oh, I just remembered: VIZ also recoloured Jynx, since an oversensitive lady named Carole Boston Weatherford thought that Jynx black design was implying racism and she didn't even bother to research the matter properly, which would have led her to find out that Jynx was probably inspired by ganguro.

Fun fact: The author of The Electric Tales of Pikachu, Toshihiro Ono, is a hentai mangaka. That explains why every female in The Electric Tales of Pikachu originally had giant bazongas.

Well, there's a cultural difference. If I remember correctly the manga has a lot of 'toilet humor'. The original series was 14 volumes, but there are sequels, so Pokémon Pocket Monsters is still kinda ongoing. It's just that it classifies every new arc as a new series, unlike Pokémon Special. All in all there are 30 volumes if you count all series and this crappy manga is for some reason the most popular Pokémon manga in Japan, even more popular than Pokémon Special.

"We'll keep in all the blood,

I dunno about this. Scraps and bruises, yes but I dunno if they'd keep in gushing blood like with Clay.

I was thinking that too. Believe me im kinnda glad for some of the censorships, but that one was just plain dumb. (although the one with the shirt ripping and the pokeballs being there did strike me as kinnda funny XD)

I fear to think what'd happen if he went... all the way if you get my drift.

"上連雀三平". This is another one of his pseudonym.

And his works of non-adult manga "Barcode Fighter" has a small reputation due there is a boy looks like a girl...... ;216;
